Tucker Carlson gets thrown around as a possibility, but there’s something he’s missing that would qualify him as a real contender. I can’t quite put my finger on it. Not macho enough I think.

I can see Dan Crenshaw or maybe Josh Hawley doing well. The latter is very good at whipping up anti-coastie sentiment.

The Agricultural Inspection Stations are staffed by an elite military force that will turn away all invaders at the border. Caltrans will mire troop transports in a sea of projects whose signs proudly announce expected completion dates of 2017. SFO will do its part by turning off its ILS antennae and being too foggy to land at.

For whatever reason, despite having grown up in CA I have been told I have a vaguely midwestern affect on my speech, which along with my paunchy white guy look makes people think I'm fromThe Heartland and a MAGA chud. So they constantly open up to me about their lovely political beliefs.

I care less about whatever Trump says because it's all lies and performance art, and am much more concerned about the liberal patsies who want to look like they're leading the revolution when they respond with "sick burns".

Like everything in both those tweets is simple campaign theme theatrics that people should ignore. Trump's thing is being the most stereotypical right wing culture warrior, and part of that audience includes the people who talk about California falling into the ocean without any hint of sarcasm or sympathy. Gavin's whole thing is clearing his throat and stiltedly reading "shut up, orange man" off a script and then waiting for your applause.

There have always been Republicans who feel misrepresented because their politicians were too afraid to suggest that nobody is entitled to healthcare, and that they should wrap that idea up in a metaphor of self improvement. There have always been Republicans who felt that the answer to middle east violence is the revival of the crusades. Trump just threw all the metaphors and dog whistles away and speaks to them publicly, but the idea has always been the same. Since I'm not voting for Republicans even if they go back to wrapping suffering up in metaphors or appeals for the greater good, I could care less about it. The real problem is the number of lovely Dems whose campaign strategy is to fill the Jon Stewart sized hole in your heart by saying "shut up, orange man" enough times that you'll feel energized for whatever vague, numbers-driven policy their donors have lobbied for.

This is actually something I sort of liked about Jerry Brown. He didn't want to get into Twitter feuds with Trump, he actually avoided it because Twitter feuds have been Trump's thing since he signed up for that site and he even finds time to taunt celebrities as President. Don't bother. Instead he did things like send national guard to the border with explicit orders not to enforce federal immigration laws. Since Trump is such a dumbass for little time for details, he declared victory over California before realizing he had lost.

The whole point of the modern Republican party is "less sympathy". You join it or support it because you don't have sympathy/empathy for others, which makes guys like Trump who are just giant unrepentant assholes to literally everybody their perfect champions.

You said "the whole point of the modern Republican party is less sympathy" and people join it because they don't have sympathy for others. That's demonstrably not true. They have their ingroups and their outgroups, they're very sympathetic to, for instance, some cop feeling panicked by a black teen walking by and shooting him in the back 4 times.

The point is not "that both sides are wrong" or "whataboutism" it's that your statement "the whole point of the modern Republican party is less sympathy" is easily proven incorrect. The whole point of the Republican party (and of right-wing political thought in general, of which there is a lot of even in the Dem side) is to create an overclass and an underclass heirarchy. People in the overclass get sympathy, people in the underclass don't.

It's important to understand their goals because Republicans especially love to obscure this with 'small government' and 'respect the troops' poo poo. The Reactionary Mind is a good book that you can read about how right-wingers actually think and practice their morality (or lack of).

That's not sympathy. Republicans are supposed to be sympathetic to vets, too, but if you're a veteran and you disagree with their worldview, for instance just by telling them not to thank you for your service because you're not proud of it and it makes you feel uncomfortable, they will turn on you instantly and start lecturing and screeching at you. Republicans don't give a poo poo about the cop, they're just happy to see a black teen get shot, because they're racists with no empathy. Republican prostrating before the police is simply a facet of authoritarianism, not sympathy for cops.

I've literally almost come to blows with a (non LEO) Republican about the cop poo poo. They absolutely believe cops are out there bravely putting themselves on the line against the underclass (and oh also racism does feed and bolster this belief - it would be stupid to assume otherwise). And them turning on vets is 100% on brand because, again, if you're against their hierarchy then you are by definition against them. This is why the casual accusations of traitor and talk of sedition came almost exclusively from the right.

It's not about "lack of empathy" in general. If you play by their rules and you're in the overclass right-wingers will be *genuinely* nice to you, they will donate their time and money and emotional support for you. What makes them dangerous and immoral is that they will literally withdraw that in a heartbeat if they perceive you as either a) the underclass or b) against their hierarchy designs. But dehumanizing them as non-empathetic stains is not going to help you beat them IMO.

Infinite Karma

It's not as complicated as all that. Republicans have a hard-on for capital-J Justice, which to them means punishment raining down as much as possible, because bad people are getting away with being bad (it doesn't matter whether this is factually true or consistently judged, they have enough stored up resentment to find everyone guilty of any number of things). It's not even remotely about being equitable or building a fair or prosperous society. They also don't pause and wonder if the punishment (like putting kids in cages at the border) is too harsh because they don't care... they have no empathy. They don't have empathy for cops or soldiers, either, they just see them as the tools that get to use guns to punish people the way that they would be punished if they were the Emperor in this power fantasy.

It's worth dehumanizing them as non-empathetic stains because it does help you beat them - if you know that appeals to fairness or empathy or kindness will fall on deaf ears. you shouldn't bother making them.

Both sides see the absolute worst of each other. People on the left see Republicans as exactly has everyone here has described. Republicans see all left leaning folks as idiots who don't know basic economics and want everything to be free, as violent thugs (protests/Antifa) or as american hating people that want to see the United States fail (kneeling during the anthem, burning the flag, etc).

I've said it before, but I live in Anaheim so it's Orange County. I know a ton of republicans. Some of them are 100% pieces of poo poo, and others are a little more purple than pure red. They have socialist leanings for things like universal healthcare, education overhaul, etc., but won't ever call themselves Democrats. Many of them fervently still believe that the Democrats were the party of slavery.
