Yes, he's saying that because he isn't a "proper Jew" he cannot possibly comment *against* allegations of anti-Semitism against Labour, and neither can Michael Rosen.

Retweeting and otherwise publishing those concerns, however? Fine.

I mean stating the obvious here but there should be no way it's possible to defect from Labour to the Tories. Every time that happens I just think of why my political beliefs are what they are and can't imagine how you throw your lot in with that lot having nominally been part of the Labour party. Again it says obvious things about their conviction and it's nothing about being a hardliner or extreme or brainwashed and inflexible or any of the things that get thrown around it's having a moral base for what you believe enough to make it your job.

The problem with overhead light railways in the middle of cities is where do you put them so they're reaching places that public transport should without huge bridges going everywhere. I guess you could put them at surface level and then have the roads on top of them, but that just sounds like 'underground with more steps'.

Electric buses at surface level is probably more practical than either for medium cities without existing tram infrastructure.

The problem with buses is that they're restricted by existing traffic, which makes them less attractive as traffic goes up - this is what's killing a lot of systems in the US for example. Bus lanes are a very temporary patch for this problem (as anyone - for example me - who just took 45 minutes to travel four miles despite the entire route being bus-laned can tell you), for them to make a real difference they have to be completely segregated and by that point you might as well chuck in a tram because otherwise you're just carrying a shitload of batteries everywhere for no reason.

Leeds, which kicked off the discussion, is a pretty extreme edge case because it really doesn't have the density to support even a tram system and then battery/trolley hybrids might work, but it's a lot of money for really marginal gains.

There's already a distinction between people who are of Jewish descent but don't consider themselves Jews (whether Orthodox rules would or not), people who consider themselves ethnically Jewish but non-observant, and people who consider themselves religiously Jewish but not ethnically Jewish (converts), he's just throwing an additional one in there where you have to clear a bunch of hurdles to be part of 'the Jewish community', regardless of ethnicity or religion.

Seemingly he's doing this to restrict the number of people who are allowed views on Labour's antisemitism, which is pretty gross because antisemites don't usually make that distinction, and will just attack cemeteries for having "foreign writing" and people for "looking like a Jew".

(And ethnicity itself is a giant :can:, especially when combined with religion. Like we're fairly sure that some Jewish groups were of Greek rather than Levantine origin, and converted to Judaism during the Second Temple Era, but a modern day descendant of them doesn't magically go back to being Greek if they aren't raised Jewish, because ethnicity is in and of itself largely cultural and historical rather than genetic.)

The poll of polls is interesting at the moment https://www.theguardian.com/politics/ng-interactive/2019/oct/31/uk-general-election-2019-poll-tracker

Labour rising (as per 2017) while the Tories are plateauing. Currently a hint (but nothing solid) that their polls are starting to bundle a little bit at the lower end, pulling them to plateau and potentially signalling a downturn.

Depends on how many more car-crash interviews we can give them.

I think more than anything, British culture is defined by what people from the outside see it as, and cutting off the alienation caused by capitalism without some island in the North Atlantic having to define itself by unified traits but rather by finding commonality in communities would be better.

This is a Good Post, thanks.

I don't disagree with the goal of defining ourselves by our community rather than by shared traits, but that seems incompatible with the nation state international system we currently live within. Like, if you point at most countries there are clear norms and customs shared by a majority of the population, often with one or two large minority groups with different sets of customs. In the UK we have 3 nations with different customs shunted into a single Kingdom, and even in the biggest of those countries people from Cornwall have radically different customs and views to people in London. The UK seems to be a nation of a million different minority groups, and there's nothing wrong with that but as you say the only solution seems to be to base our identity on commonalities within communities.

But that is moving towards more of a confederated anarchist or communist ideal, which is not how the global system is set up to work. So how do we move from a nation state model to an internationalist socialist model here, in Europe, and globally?

E: Asking because while I consider myself a socialist these types of concerns with statehood and culture sometimes feel like they're threatening to pull me onto the High Tory train (which shares many concerns albeit from the opposite side of the class war).

A few reasons - until very recently DC motors were much more easily throttle-able than AC, an important consideration for short-distance systems. Also if you're stringing up naked cables all over the place in close proximity to humans you want low(er) voltage for safety, so the advantages of AC evaporate. Pus I *think* (but I'm not entirely sure) that regenerative braking on AC systems is, if not impossible, extremely tricky, so you're wasting an awful lot of energy in a system with frequent stops.
