These were commercial premises - I'd assume this sort of bypassing would be impossible (or at least very difficult) to do (or conceal) in a home because there's so little exposed piping upstream of the meter for safety reasons.

The ones I was thinking of are the kind that the bloke down the pub would offer to fit for testing your gas meter (I think I had a coughing fit) and you'd just have to hope that your landlord gives zero fucks and the gas man doesn't make a surprise visit.
