"Castle Bravo's yield was 15 megatons of TNT, 2.5 times the predicted 6.0 megatons, due to unforeseen additional reactions involving 7Li,[3] which led to the unexpected radioactive contamination of areas to the east of Bikini Atoll. At the time, it was the most powerful artificial explosion in history.

Fallout, the most heavy of which in the form of pulverized surface coral from the detonation fell on residents of Rongelap and Utirik atolls, while the more particulate and gaseous fallout spread around the world. The inhabitants of the islands were not evacuated until three days later and suffered radiation sickness. Twenty-three crew members of the Japanese fishing vessel Daigo Fukuryū Maru ("Lucky Dragon No. 5") were also contaminated by the heavy fallout, experiencing acute radiation syndrome. The blast incited international reaction over atmospheric thermonuclear testing.[4]

"Radioactive fallout was spread eastward onto the inhabited Rongelap and Rongerik atolls, which were evacuated[30] 48 hours after the detonation.[31] In 1957, the Atomic Energy Commission deemed Rongelap safe to return, and allowed 82 inhabitants to move back to the island. Upon their return, they discovered that their previous staple foods, including arrowroot, makmok, and fish, had either disappeared or gave residents various illnesses,[32] and were again removed.[33] Ultimately, 15 islands and atolls were contaminated, and by 1963 Marshall Islands natives began to suffer from thyroid tumors, including 20 of 29 Rongelap children at the time of Bravo, and many birth defects were reported.[medical citation needed] The islanders received compensation from the U.S. government, relative to how much contamination they received, beginning in 1956; by 1995 the Nuclear Claims Tribunal reported that it had awarded $43.2 million, nearly its entire fund, to 1,196 claimants for 1,311 illnesses.[31] A medical study, named Project 4.1, studied the effects of the fallout on the islanders.[31]"

Mexico grants asylum to Bolivia's Evo Morales
aljazeera.com/2 hours ago

Mexico granted asylum to Bolivia's former President Evo Morales on Monday as unrest shook the South American country, helping cement the Mexican government's emerging role as a bastion of diplomatic support for left-wing leaders in Latin America.

Mexico's Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said Morales's life was in danger, and the decision to grant him asylum was in Mexico's long tradition of sheltering exiles.

Bolivia's Morales Urges Opposition to 'Pacify the Country'

Bolivia's Evo Morales called on the opposition to keep the peace Monday as a deepening political crisis over his disputed reelection last month has led to his resignation.

Morales resigned over the weekend after protests followed October elections, which granted him a fourth term; however, there were accusations of "irregularities."

According to the Bolivian constitution, the vice president is next in line to take power when the president steps down. The head of the country's Senate is third in line, but both of them, as well as a number of other top ministers, resigned shortly after Morales, leaving a power vacuum in the South American country awaiting rescheduled elections.

Opposition leader Jeanine Anez said Sunday she would assume the interim presidency of Bolivia, but Congress must first be convened to vote her into power.

Morales sent a string of tweets lashing out at his opponents Monday, saying they had a "responsibility to pacify the country and guarantee the political stability and peaceful coexistence of our people."

Bolivia’s socialist President Evo Morales was forced to resign Sunday under threat from the nation’s military, police forces, and violent right-wing protestors who have burned and ransacked the homes of members of Morales’ party, assaulted supporters of the president, and kidnapped a Bolivian mayor.

Political leaders and activists around the world immediately denounced Morales’ ouster as a military coup that leaves Bolivia without a constitutionally elected government. Williams Kaliman, the chief commander of the Bolivian armed forces, pressured Morales to resign earlier Sunday.

“The coup mongers are destroying the rule of law,” Morales, Bolivia’s first indigenous president, tweeted hours after announcing his resignation in a televised address.

Bolivian Coup Comes Less Than a Week After Morales Stopped Multinational Firm's Lithium Deal

The Sunday military coup in Bolivia has put in place a government which appears likely to reverse a decision by just-resigned President Evo Morales to cancel an agreement with a German company for developing lithium deposits in the Latin American country for batteries like those in electric cars.

"Bolivia's lithium belongs to the Bolivian people," tweeted Washington Monthly contributor David Atkins. "Not to multinational corporate cabals."

The coup, which on Sunday resulted in Morales resigning and going into hiding, was the result of days of protests from right-wing elements angry at the leftist Morales government. Sen. Jeanine Añez, of the center-right party Democratic Unity, is currently the interim president in the unstable post-coup government in advance of elections.

That's an obviously leading question, but I'll answer it anyway.

It depends on what the American people want. If they want fascism and an end to democracy, they will applaud the courage of the Senate and reelect Trump and give Congress to the Republicans. If Americans want Constitutional Democracy, they will be furious at the Senate and vote the Republicans out.

If the Senate actually votes to remove him from office, some of them will be hailed as heroes and retain their seats.

People who are assuming that a Trump impeachment and acquittal would be bad for Dems are stupidly relying on historical data where N=1. In the case of Clinton, this did end up being a mistake for the GOP, because the people were disgusted that they impeached him over a blowjob, and there was never, ever support for removal from office.

In this case we have international extortion for the purpose of undermining a political rival. It doesn't get more corrupt than this, and we have a solid majority who not only want him impeached, but removed as well. That suggests that an acquittal will anger the voters and actually be good for Dems.

On top of what the others have said, the process of impeachment is going to be a massive media feeding frenzy. Right now a majority are in favor of impeachment, but that is largely off of tangential attention because they don't mainline the news like we do. A large part of the pro impeachment numbers is simply that people don't like Donny.

Over the course of public hearings leading up to the House passing Articles of Impeachment and through the Senate hearings, the people are going to be faced with all the information. Additionally they will see the arguments and actions of the Republicans in their attempt to derail the hearings. Republicans can't help but be disingenuous dicks throughout, and that's most likely to lead to a backlash.

It's not going to just be that the Republicans refused to convict in the Senate, it's going to be weeks and weeks of them abusing the intelligence and morality of the public while doing it. If they had decided to stick with the message of this all being bad, but not impeachable they would likely make out much better. However they're going all in on the Democrats being treasonous liars trying to take out a saint who has done nothing wrong. That's the worst possible public relations angle to take when the maligned saint you're defending is the walking sack of vice and criminality that is Donald Trump.

The propaganda machine of the right wing media and the party elders that have been around the block did exactly this, and would deeply, desperately love to continue doing so. It really would be the best approach. This approach is failing for two reasons.

One, malignant narcissists don't work that way and on a personal level Trump will obliterate their political careers with a tweet if anyone else in the party gives him anything that doesn't sound like fawning, absolute servility. With his personality that's just how it works. No level of self destructive behavior is worse in his mind than receiving what he feels is his due.

Two, on an institutional level, they've been fooling the rubes with apocalyptic rhetoric and race-based hatred so long that the institutions are no longer in the control of those elders. The true believer inmates now run the asylum and have control of the institution. Any attempt to paint this as "Bad, but not impeachable" is seen by the zealots as betrayal, giving ground to baby murdering liberal Satanist foreign invaders that want to murder your dog and destroy your "freedom". When you believe that, nothing but scorched earth full offense all the time is acceptable.

"The federal government, which ended the 2019 budget year with its largest deficit in seven years, began the new budget year with a deficit in October that was 33.8% bigger than a year ago as spending hit a record.

The Treasury Department said Wednesday that the deficit last month totaled $134.5 billion, up from a shortfall in October 2018 of $100.5 billion.

The government ran up a deficit of $984.4 billion for the 2019 budget year that ended Sept. 30, 26% larger than in 2018.

The Congressional Budget Office is forecasting that the deficit for 2020 will hit $1 trillion and will remain over $1 trillion for the next decade. The country has not experienced $1 trillion annual deficits since 2009 through 2012 following the 2008 financial crisis."

Watchdog Report: Trump Official Punished Public Servant Over Her Iranian Heritage
npr.org/November 14, 2019
"And some of the career civil servants the president is referring to have said they have been retaliated against following reports in conservative media questioning their loyalty to Trump.

On Thursday, the State Department's internal watchdog affirmed that this happened to one high-ranking foreign policy official who was improperly removed from her post by White House officials in the wake of an online smear campaign on alt-right websites.

The official in question is Sahar Nowrouzzadeh, a 36-year-old national security specialist fluent in Persian and Arabic who helped craft the Iran nuclear deal in the Obama administration."

Bolivia president's initial indigenous-free cabinet heightens polarization
'Bolivia’s controversial new interim president has unveiled a new cabinet which critics say could further increase polarization in the country still deeply split over the ousting of her predecessor, Evo Morales.

To the applause of military top brass, lawmakers and senators, Jeanine Áñez vowed to “reconstruct democracy” and “pacify the country” at a late-night ceremony in the “Palacio Quemado” (Burnt Palace) presidential building.

“We want to be a democratic tool of inclusion and unity,” said the 52-year-old religious conservative, sitting at a table bearing a huge open Bible and crucifix.

But the transitional cabinet initially sworn into office on Wednesday night did not include a single indigenous person, in a country where at least 40% of the population belongs to one of 36 indigenous groups.'

Washington is the latest to allow people to change their gender designation to ‘X’ on driver licenses
'Another state is allowing its residents to choose the letter "X" for their gender designation on its identification cards.

The Washington State Department of Licensing announced the change Wednesday. The "X" is an alternative to "M" for male and “F” for female. Department of Licensing director Teresa Bernsten said the change happened so some don’t feel improperly identified on state-issued cards like driver licenses and instruction permits.'

Because people go to jail for lying to Congress all the time in these things so he has to be worried about not saying anything that could be taken as a falsehood? I'm not saying he was shaking in his boots, I'm actually rather impressed with how composed he was for being forcefully locked in a box with a bunch of fighting congressmen and then ordered to punch at the president, comical farce that he is.

In Trump’s Jaded Capital, Marie Yovanovitch’s Uncynical Outrage

"A fired Ambassador demonstrates that it is apparently still possible to be shocked by the President."
....
"For a few hours on Friday, an unassuming career diplomat named Marie (Masha) Yovanovitch did something that I thought had become impossible in Donald Trump’s Washington: she managed to hold on to her amazement and outrage at the President’s amazing and outrageous actions. In this hyper-partisan, hyper-political time, she was neither. Nearly three years into this Presidency, that is no given. A state of weary cynicism has taken hold regarding Trump, among his supporters and also his critics. He is what he is. What can we do about it? Even impeachment has quickly come to be seen through this lens. Members of Congress are all too likely to vote the party line. Does any of it matter?"

Impeachment and the Stone Verdict Show Trump Is Surrounded by Criminals

"From the perspective of President Trump’s frustrated critics, the attempts to subject him to legal accountability have amounted to a long string of failures. Robert Mueller failed to produce a clear indictment of his dealings with Russia, and impeachment appears headed toward a partisan stalemate that will leave him in office.

But as Trump’s constant boil of rage attests, those efforts have hardly failed. The legal ring surrounding him is collectively producing a historic indictment of his endemic corruption and criminality."

Former SS guard goes on trial over 5,230 murders in what could be last ever Nazi prosecution of its kind
independent.co.uk/9 hours ago
"In what could possibly be the last court case of its kind, a former Nazi concentration camp guard is on trial in Hamburg.

Bruno Dey, who joined the SS in his teens, covered his face on his recent arrival at court in a wheelchair, on the third day of a 23-day trial, scheduled to run until late February. As a result of the ages of those involved, each trial day is limited to two hours a day and there are a maximum of two trial days per week.

Facing 5,230 counts of accessory to murder, Dey claimed in a statement he had no knowledge of the mass murders under way at the Stutthof concentration camp, despite admitting seeing prisoners led into the gas chambers, hearing their screams and noting the rattling of the steel door."

Democrats Aren’t Moving Left. They’re Returning to Their Roots.
politico.com/November 04, 2018
"Be advised: “Democrats are in danger of going too far left in 2018.” So warn Republicans like Mitt Romney and ex-Democrats like Joe Lieberman and public personae as diverse as James Comey and Howard Schultz. In recent months, the pundit class has determined that the party’s leftward lurch heralds the rise of a “liberal tea party”—a movement that could very well unmoor Democrats from their longstanding center-left traditions, in close imitation of the spiral of events that caused the Republican Party to turn sharply to the right in recent years."
....
"But there’s something wrong with this historical interpretation: Truman strongly supported single-payer health care. Moynihan supported a universal basic income in the 1960s. Dating back to World War II, Democrats sought to make a government-paid education available to as many Americans as possible. If Democrats are marching to the left, that road leads directly back to platforms and politicians who, in their day, commanded wide support and existed firmly in the mainstream of political thought."
