Castle Bravo "Castle Bravo's yield was 15 megatons of TNT, 2.5 times the predicted 6.0 megatons, due to unforeseen additional reactions involving 7Li,[3] which led to the unexpected radioactive contamination of areas to the east of Bikini Atoll. At the time, it was the most powerful artificial explosion in history. Fallout, the most heavy of which in the form of pulverized surface coral from the detonation fell on residents of Rongelap and Utirik atolls, while the more particulate and gaseous fallout spread around the world. The inhabitants of the islands were not evacuated until three days later and suffered radiation sickness. Twenty-three crew members of the Japanese fishing vessel Daigo Fukuryū Maru ("Lucky Dragon No. 5") were also contaminated by the heavy fallout, experiencing acute radiation syndrome. The blast incited international reaction over atmospheric thermonuclear testing.[4] .... "Radioactive fallout was spread eastward onto the inhabited Rongelap and Rongerik atolls, which were evacuated[30] 48 hours after the detonation.[31] In 1957, the Atomic Energy Commission deemed Rongelap safe to return, and allowed 82 inhabitants to move back to the island. Upon their return, they discovered that their previous staple foods, including arrowroot, makmok, and fish, had either disappeared or gave residents various illnesses,[32] and were again removed.[33] Ultimately, 15 islands and atolls were contaminated, and by 1963 Marshall Islands natives began to suffer from thyroid tumors, including 20 of 29 Rongelap children at the time of Bravo, and many birth defects were reported.[medical citation needed] The islanders received compensation from the U.S. government, relative to how much contamination they received, beginning in 1956; by 1995 the Nuclear Claims Tribunal reported that it had awarded $43.2 million, nearly its entire fund, to 1,196 claimants for 1,311 illnesses.[31] A medical study, named Project 4.1, studied the effects of the fallout on the islanders.[31]"

That's an obviously leading question, but I'll answer it anyway. It depends on what the American people want. If they want fascism and an end to democracy, they will applaud the courage of the Senate and reelect Trump and give Congress to the Republicans. If Americans want Constitutional Democracy, they will be furious at the Senate and vote the Republicans out. If the Senate actually votes to remove him from office, some of them will be hailed as heroes and retain their seats.

People who are assuming that a Trump impeachment and acquittal would be bad for Dems are stupidly relying on historical data where N=1. In the case of Clinton, this did end up being a mistake for the GOP, because the people were disgusted that they impeached him over a blowjob, and there was never, ever support for removal from office. In this case we have international extortion for the purpose of undermining a political rival. It doesn't get more corrupt than this, and we have a solid majority who not only want him impeached, but removed as well. That suggests that an acquittal will anger the voters and actually be good for Dems.

On top of what the others have said, the process of impeachment is going to be a massive media feeding frenzy. Right now a majority are in favor of impeachment, but that is largely off of tangential attention because they don't mainline the news like we do. A large part of the pro impeachment numbers is simply that people don't like Donny. Over the course of public hearings leading up to the House passing Articles of Impeachment and through the Senate hearings, the people are going to be faced with all the information. Additionally they will see the arguments and actions of the Republicans in their attempt to derail the hearings. Republicans can't help but be disingenuous dicks throughout, and that's most likely to lead to a backlash. It's not going to just be that the Republicans refused to convict in the Senate, it's going to be weeks and weeks of them abusing the intelligence and morality of the public while doing it. If they had decided to stick with the message of this all being bad, but not impeachable they would likely make out much better. However they're going all in on the Democrats being treasonous liars trying to take out a saint who has done nothing wrong. That's the worst possible public relations angle to take when the maligned saint you're defending is the walking sack of vice and criminality that is Donald Trump.

The propaganda machine of the right wing media and the party elders that have been around the block did exactly this, and would deeply, desperately love to continue doing so. It really would be the best approach. This approach is failing for two reasons. One, malignant narcissists don't work that way and on a personal level Trump will obliterate their political careers with a tweet if anyone else in the party gives him anything that doesn't sound like fawning, absolute servility. With his personality that's just how it works. No level of self destructive behavior is worse in his mind than receiving what he feels is his due. Two, on an institutional level, they've been fooling the rubes with apocalyptic rhetoric and race-based hatred so long that the institutions are no longer in the control of those elders. The true believer inmates now run the asylum and have control of the institution. Any attempt to paint this as "Bad, but not impeachable" is seen by the zealots as betrayal, giving ground to baby murdering liberal Satanist foreign invaders that want to murder your dog and destroy your "freedom". When you believe that, nothing but scorched earth full offense all the time is acceptable.

Impeachment and the Stone Verdict Show Trump Is Surrounded by Criminals nymag.com/Nov. 15, 2019 "From the perspective of President Trump’s frustrated critics, the attempts to subject him to legal accountability have amounted to a long string of failures. Robert Mueller failed to produce a clear indictment of his dealings with Russia, and impeachment appears headed toward a partisan stalemate that will leave him in office. But as Trump’s constant boil of rage attests, those efforts have hardly failed. The legal ring surrounding him is collectively producing a historic indictment of his endemic corruption and criminality." In recent months, the pundit class has determined that the party’s leftward lurch heralds the rise of a “liberal tea party”—a movement that could very well unmoor Democrats from their longstanding center-left traditions, in close imitation of the spiral of events that caused the Republican Party to turn sharply to the right in recent years." ....
