GreyjoyBastard posted:Lithium's not really the biggest deal in even nationalized Bolivian assets it may not be the biggest right now but it has the second-largest reserves in the world (counting both currently economic to extract and not-yet-economic to extract stocks, listed as "resources" on this chart), and it is only going up in value as westerners panic and think they can solve climate change by buying electric cars lithium is a huge future growth industry for international capital, and a poor country cannot be allowed to decide it would like to develop its lithium reserves as a national industry to enrich the local poor instead of selling it for pennies to vulture capitalists

it's not just lithium, Bolivia also has a decent amount of oil/gas. one of morales' first policies was to put a massive tax on extractive industries (something like 85% when it was previously like 15%) and that will probably be one of the first things to go as well

I'm not sure that Russia going from "enough nukes to kill everyone 100 times" to "enough nukes to kill everyone 25 times" creates an opportunity for the US. I'm not saying this in defense of the US but in defense of the obviously reasonable and laudable decision for Russia to reduce its nuclear arsenal so that it can put the money toward literally anything else. If the money goes toward statues of Pamela Anderson made of cocaine for some oil magnate's boat, that's much, much, much better than nukes Civilized Fishbot has issued a correction as of 01:37 on Nov 13, 2019 |

CAPS LOCK BROKEN posted:Dipshit liberals like greyjoy are just the PR arm for empire. They can mr. bean it up everywhere, throw up their hands, and pretend or try and gaslight you like none of this poo poo is happening Many people have internalized this idea that withholding an opinion is somehow the most intellectual option through it's "neutrality" (even though in practice that's effectively approving of what's happening). ...except when they don't do that. For some reason people like him suddenly have plenty of moral clarity on a topic like Tulsi Gabbard (or pretty much every other issue that doesn't have the backing of mainstream media and the US government). I don't think this is a conscious decision on their part - I think they're just rubes who have no clue how much they're manipulated by the media ecosystem they get their information from. They generally have just enough intellectual honesty to admit when they're flat-out proven wrong about something, but they will always demand proof (and a sometimes impossible level of it) that the official line on issues like this isn't true and immediately lap up any excuse to believe the mainstream government messaging. If the government and media manage to come up with a convincing line justifying this, or if we get more people like that one guy popping in to talk about how, as people with family in Bolivia (or whatever), they think Morales is bad, you'll likely see them decide that suddenly the truth is nuanced again and maybe this isn't bad or a coup.

while this is still a very bad situation it's hard to see the degree of resistance to this takeover as anything other than a defeat for the coup. despite best efforts they are not consolidating power as quickly or as effectively as they were hoping they would. it's been several days and whether or not they even entirely control the government is still very much an open question, and they seem to have been a bit unprepared for the speed at which MAS has been able to get people out onto the streets. I'm sure the coup plotters were definitely not prepared for MAS to set up what is effectively a rival legislature, and wherever they're holding that session I hope it is well hidden and well defended; those lawmakers are risking their lives.
