Speaking of Laura Dern, I just saw the new Noah Baumbach movie tonight, Marriage Story. She's in it, she's very good at being a competent manipulator with a pleasant exterior, she's great and I'm glad she's in new stuff

Saw "The Mandalorian" or "Tales of not quite Boba Fett", and it was good. They quite literally crammed every possible piece of previous SW set dressing into the show, but it was good. The highlight was listening to Werner Herzog talk, and watching (not IG-88) act stupid and kick rear end. Also every Mandalorian is apparently a bounty hunter.

The version of Star Wars up for streaming on Disney+ has the Greedo scene revised AGAIN. https://slate.com/culture/2019/11/star-wars-greedo-han-shot-first-edited-again-maclunkey.html Honestly this one's an improvement over the past few edits. Assuming "maclunky!" means something like "die, rear end in a top hat!" it finally makes sense why Han and Greedo would then attempt to shoot each other simultaneously. It only took them 22 years and 3 separate attempts but they finally got it to be coherent. Time amd effort well spent, right guys?

I never really understood the prequels until Lucas built low income housing in Marin. Dude is a masterclass troll. He really is just doing it for the lulz and I have to respect that.

My main issue was the Carbonite prisoners, i guess it caught on like gangbusters after han survived.

Toughy posted:You forgot the blacksmith already? I guess it makes a bit more sense that they're doing Carbonite freezing of people after the OT, I originally thought this was going to be before the OT and be about Bubba Fett, and Carbonite freezing then would just be stupid and pandering as they actually make a point of it in Empire that it's an industrial process (I think for freezing, storing and transporting that gas that Lando is mining) and absolutely not meant for humans.
|
# ? Nov 13, 2019 12:52 |

but the issue in Empire was that the facilities on Bespin were crude industrial ones not purpose built for freezing people, not that the process itself was in question. It could be that carbon freezing folks was always one of the industry standards and after a legendary hunter scored a famous double bounty that decorated a notorious crime boss' palace with the process it took off even more with any hunter worth his guild liscence springing for a carbonite chamber in their ship.

I always took it as a mix of those things. Like, being frozen in carbonite was NEVER ideal for any living thing AND that the way they were going to do it on Bespin was gonna suck hard core for Solo. Like it was a 2 for 1 combo of "Welp this probably might kill you or make you retarded or something idk" to be honest I never really thought they NEEDED to do that to him. I mean, yea he was an escape prone jack-rear end but really once they got the cuffs on him, what's he going to do? And also he's not even that much of a trophy. Who outside of the cluster is gonna know some slack jawed yocal driving taxi service for an old man and his boy toy on a beat up station wagon?

IIRC they specifically only did it to Solo in order to test the process, because Vader wanted to freeze Luke to take him alive to the Emperor, but he wanted to make sure it was at least somewhat safe before he tried it out on Luke. Boba Fett specifically protests this as he wants Solo alive and this risks killing him, making him worthless to him. e: It even makes a bit more sense to do it on Luke. Being a somewhat trained Jedi in Empire he can do stuff like mind control people and move poo poo with his mind. Not ideal for a prisoner. My impression was that it was like waterboarding, a hosed up thing you could do to a prisoner. IIRC the person in Carbonite is awake and aware.

Still have no clue why it was ever changed because Han Solo early on in the movie is absolutely a loving rear end in a top hat who would immediately shoot a fellow notorious space trafficker dude who he's obviously on very poor terms with... and changing that totally blows up Han's growth from morally ambiguous dickhead who cares only about himself to hero of the Rebellion. Plus the original script literally says Han shot Greedo so uh George Lucas is a crazy goddamn idiot as usual.

Besides which I'm pretty sure in most places on Eath murking a guy with a gun on you saying basically "I'm going to shoot you in the face riiigght abou-" is self defense.
