What is the difference between hard rock and metal? I know there are a billion types of metal music but it just strikes me as weird that metal is like porn in that I can't define it but I know it when I hear it. Guns n Roses weren't metal, were they? They would just be hard rock? NikkolasKing fucked around with this message at 09:49 on Nov 15, 2019 |

The line is fuzzy because genres are hard. Guns 'N Roses are not metal, imo, but Iron Maiden absolutely are. But then you get weird cases like how Def Leppard started out as a metal band not unlike Maiden, but then moved to arena rock and I can't really tell you what changed.

If my dad likes it, it’s hard rock. if my dad hates it, it’s metal.

It's something about the riffs and drumming. You generally have more chuggy or aggressive riffs in metal, where hard rock tends more towards melodic. But especially hard rock and oldschool heavy metal are very close. Lemmy famously insisted that Motörhead played rock'n'roll, but everyone else classified them as heavy metal or speed metal. Tremolo picking can be a good indicator, since basically no one plays surf rock anymore KozmoNaut fucked around with this message at 09:13 on Nov 15, 2019 |

Yeah it's metal. I'd almost describe it as industrial metal but it has a lot of different flavors mixed in.

I just listened to it and it has a lot of electronic influences but I can sort of see where you get some metal out of it. You might be into Fear Factory: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0Q7yaDqLqs

Advent Sorrow just imploded, turns out the frontman is a huge nazi and the rest of the band want nothing to do with it. Really unfortunate, they ruled hard. Best part, he tried to deny any NS connections so someone posted his tattoo on the inside of his lip with 2 swastikas.

If we're talking about video game OSTs, I haven't listened to metal in years but Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines got me interested in this band called Tiamat. This is the song that was playing in one of the game's clubs. If anybody here has any albums of theirs to recommend, I'd appreciate it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjIg5lrbEwU I tend to like "Gothic" music these days, like Dark Wave Ethereal Wave, etc..Not really into heavy stuff like I used to be but I guess I just like that more somber, depressed sound even metalized.

kumba posted:speaking of melodeath, I haven't seen a ton of that released this year There's been a bunch, actually. Aephanemer - Prokopton has been mentioned here a few times, but it bears repeating because it's one of the best melodeath albums in years. Vorna - Sateet palata saavat. This band used to be okay but not great, until they put out this new album and broke the loving bank. Kinda teeters between atmoblack and melodeath. Insomnium - Heart Like a Grave is pretty obvious. Not quite the masterpiece Winter's Gate was, but still a great album. Eternal Storm - Come the Tide is kinda like a more brutal Insomnium and very good at that. Crepuscle - Heavenly Skies has a lame title, but the music is drat solid. ...and I feel like I'm forgetting stuff.
