Wasn’t it mainly the Democratic Party being run by the concentrated dregs of politicians and administrators left as the good/incisive/useful ones had all hosed off to boardrooms over the previous 30 years of neoliberal consensus?

Swinson really is remarkably bad at this, just a spectacularly incoherent campaign going full on with the incredibly transparent lies. It's weird that the lib dems are that bad at understanding how the current social environment works especially online.

ThomasPaine posted:Yeah it really baffles me too. her and oberman and that panto woman whose name I forget in particular are the worst of them, but in addition to your david collier types who are just so obviously acting in sociopathically bad faith there are a troubling number folk on twitter who seem to fallen down the conspiratorial rabbit hole and genuinely believe the things they're saying and that corbyn secretly wants to actually commit genocide. I honestly do believe that more than a few of them - particularly the more vulnerable of them - are lying awake at night terrified of a labour victory despite the patent absurdity of it, and I just feel sorry for them because they're clearly just not particularly capable of meaningful critical thought and have had their genuinely well-intentioned aversion to racism weaponised people who couldn't give a gently caress about it or them. I also think there are several - weetman springs to mind - who are treating the whole thing as a bit of a fun PR game trying to launch a cosy columnist job for themselves, and more still some who nailed their colours to the mast early and are too proud to admit they got it wrong so are just doubling down over and over instead. I feel bad for her if that's the case, I know quite well that finding your place with a somewhat complicated background can be confusing. Still, most people manage to deal with it a little better.

big scary monsters posted:Surprising that Rachel "I don't look like a typical Jew" Riley doesn't see any problem with that t-shirt. Their genuine, heartfelt position seems to be that because he was part of a left-wing challenge to the board of one of the UK anti-apartheid groups in he mid 80s, Corbyn participating in that protest was actually him demonstrating his racism and ‘nearly destroying the anti-apartheid movement’. Therefore the T-shirt is cool and morally righteous. It’s... fascinating, in its own way.

Good lord this is some mad poo poo. What a time to be alive. I was trying to sleep but have had the chorus to the Suicide song Ghost Rider (if you don't know the song, it's good, sort of proto-post-punk meets early electronic music) stuck in my head. And yeah, it's a song about the Marvel character. It's totally dumb lyrically, ridiculously repetitive, and yet instead of sleeping my brain is just chanting "GHOST RIDER MOTORCYCLE HERO" & "AMERICA AMERICA IS KILLING ITS YOUTH" over & over. So now I'm just thinking about how albums that get panned at release & become well regarded later are great. (And the opposite is just as good. I will never forget both Kerrang & Metal Hammer fawning over Metallica's St Anger at release & as soon as normal people heard it they suddenly realised actually this loving awful. Except that I've since convinced myself that St Anger is ironically good but that's besides the point, you need distance to appreciate a record that bad and with lyrics that infantile)

I'm chipping away, doing my duty as an obnoxious UKMTer Edit: ok she went from I'll never vote Labour under Corbyn to I'm going to read the manifestos and decide, I'll take it. If you already hate the tories and lib dems one wonders what's in it for you to also hate corbyn, because you're getting some mixture of the three whether you like it or not, the government doesn't go away if you vote elsewise.

Well, yes. I cannot get over how terrible that Lib Dem rental deposit loan policy is. Let's ease the housing crisis by allowing renters to take out debt they can pay directly over to someone else and likely never see again. What the situation definitely needs is even more direct state subsidy of private landlords, that will help.
