Oh no, a new poll says Labour is stuffed and the conservatives have a 16% lead! Interviews were conducted by telephone 15th – 19th November 2019. So small sample size, self selecting for people who answer an unknown number, and skewed with an unknown turnout weighting Oh and in the final poll before the election they're just going to outright guess based on your readership of the daily mail. Rachel Riley is currently at 2 but this might push her to 3, and from there it's only a matter of time because the controversy becomes the identity then, and they always have to push it further to try and stay relevant. She seems to have gotten a fuckton of backlash from this one which I doubt she expected. A lot of people are complaining to Channel 4 as well. And what's different from the previous times she's hosed up is that this time she's pissed off a bunch of people who couldn't give a flying gently caress about Corbyn or Labour

Purple Prince posted:Current MP basic salary is over £70k. If they're complaining about not making enough they shouldn't be in public service. I know. I'd like to see it be enough that they wouldn't even think about bothering to take a bribe because what could they possibly want? And similarly, make their personal travel expenses and accommodation something they pay out of their salary, but increase salary to compensate (and also move parliament somewhere cheaper, and provide accommodation and food at the location). And then loving imprison them if they still do take bribes. Or collect rental income. Or get treated to lavish lunches by lobbyists. Etc. The costs of running their offices (of state) should be paid by the beauraucracy of the government, not the individual. The cost of runnign their constituency offices should also be paid by the beauraucracy, with the exception of election campaigning. And, for that matter, why is it a default expectation that public service should come with poo poo pay anyway? I have a whole raft of ideas on this which basically run to the tune of 'eliminate graft by eliminating the means by which graft is accomplished AND increasing compensation in recognition of doing a monumentally hard, expensive, and unrewarding job, but also make it very clear that any conflicts of interest that are pursued are punished accordingly. Whilst at the same time making it much more possible for people who don't have access to generational wealth to become MPs by reducing the personal expenses involved.

I mostly lurk this thread but thought I'd mention I've joined Labour today I'm looking forward to getting my membership pack whenever it arrives. Just hoping my tory-voting landlord won't see it first Does your membership number come with the membership pack, or is there another email to look forward to with it? This is my first time joining a political party and I'm not too keyed-in to a lot of this stuff really

I think this doesn't get sufficient thought. Some of my local party did a ring round of all members about 4 years ago. They tried the same thing a few months ago (with due consideration of GDR etc etc) and were enormously frustrated because almost no one answered their phones especially landlines. They got just ringing outs, they got the 1571 service, or they got answering machines. I've had my landline on 'Do Not Disturb' for months so I don't even hear it ring - and right now having just moved I don't have a landline at all. I've removed all my phone numbers from membersnet (the Labour party member database) as well.

And by a high salary I mean probably in the millions per annum, so a rail ticket even from the furthest away consitutencies every other day would be essentially ignorable expenses. Obviously, this also includes significantly improving the rail system. As with so many proposed system improvements, improving the whole system is a necessary assumption of any one part of it being improved.
