The Phoenix Hawk seems like it sucks tremendously stock between overheating meaning you can't shoot and the low armor meaning you can't fight in a prolonged battle, which all of them are

e: Also lol a .5 star mission gave me an Urbie and a Locust for Training Day, and an ambush convoy gave me eight mechs and four tanks, rip everything I own

Third shot would still push the mech to shutdown without cooling vent (3 X 34 plus movement heat). Also that would mean gutting jump jets to 3 which would neuter the jumping ability. Option would be to put a heat exchanger+, that would curb heat problem, but then I would need a pilot with weapons 2 / piloting 1, which would otherwise be pretty useless combination.

No need for jump jets when your weapon's damage relies on walking, and your base speed is 190m for getting around.

Go Gun 2 / Guts 1. Bulwark is still good.

You don't need to fire for as much heat when you're getting the Breaching Shot boost to effective damage.

It's terrible. It's noteworthy attribute is the jump distance, but it's not something that's useful in actual play, and the 10% damage boost (at a minimum cost of 11 heat to activate) can't make up for the anemic 20 tons of pod space.

Vehicle intercept missions that start ahead of you, moving away from you, with 10 ton vehicles may seem easy but... they are faster than your mechs + they have escort.

Okay this is my first time playing career mode and it's so different to Campaign mode. Just the existence of a timer that's counting down for score entirely up-ends the sense of what you do when you have long repair/injury times.

Unless I'm crazy and misreading (since I haven't gotten to play yet) UACs all seem like straight upgrades over standard ACs since for one ton you basically get to slap a second AC on. So AC5s aren't strictly great but for a battery of two of them at +1 ton, they seem worthwhile. That's all theory-crafting though.

Yeah, I just don't have a good feel for how much the higher recoil really affects accuracy or how called shots are handled with it (or the lbx)

UACs essentially force you to actually deal with recoil as a mechanic in a more direct manner. It is extremely rare for it to be worth it to fire them two rounds in a row, but at the same time you get crazy amounts of damage that one turn you do fire them. So, not great for extended fights due to the recoil, but good for taking out enemies fast when you have to.

Yeah I didnt like the timer at all and I could not find a simple lightweight mod that removed it. I just want to be able to get in my dropship, float around looking for missions, and do my thing. The big timer counting down really sucks the fun out of it for me. Also I'm unhappy with the mary-sue not-dropship/not-jumpship thing you get and wish I had a simple overlord or something.

I treat career mode as a sandbox mode. The final score means nothing to me. I only want to smash stuff with Battlemechs.

That's the great thing about it, the timer sets a pace you can race against but if your goal is to just play forever then you can just ignore it's existence and there are no consequences.

Yes, I know I'm old, get off my fucking lawn so I can yell at these clouds.

Honestly I find the timer helps me keep a sense of urgency and means that having more than one lance actually makes sense. Not being able to wait for my 4 favorite mechs and 4 favorite pilots to be good to go makes for more interesting decisions.

There was a mod I used to play with that I loved for this. It added a fatigue level to pilots, basically forcing non-injury downtime for them. This made you keep a rotation and not take the same people every single time. It really added a good extra layer to the management aspect of the game.

Gotcha, thanks. How do they interact with breaching shot? Both shots get the effect? (I'd assume so since multishot missiles do) only one? It seems like high-rank gunnery pilots could clean up with them.

this is a gross misuse of mary sue, but if it makes you feel any better the entire Argo situation was, iirc, built so you could have unlimited parts storage (a gameplay decision that makes a lot of sense) without angry TT grogs posting "WELL ACTUALLY," about the cargo capacity of an Overlord

Honestly you really don't. Just keep firing, something will hit. I keep blowing both legs off lights or heads off anythings with a single UAC10 shot, it's broken as hell. My Centurion A is an unstoppable murder monster and its never stopped firing.

We're fucking built for this shit!
Taken as a whole, I think the DLC are well worth it. Brief rundown of what they've added.

Flashpoint: Added the Crab, Hatchetman and Cyclops Mechs. Flashpoints as well, which are basically mini-stories built out of contract chains. Added a new mission type called 'Target Acquisition' as well as a new map type. The Jungle biome.

Urban Warfare: Added the Raven and Javelin Mechs, along with Electronic Warfare in the form of ECM and Active Probe. Added the Urban biome, proper City maps! More Flashpoints, a new contract type called 'Attack and Defend' and three new vehicles.

Heavy Metal: Strap in fucker, they added some Mechs. The Flea, Vulcan, Phoenix Hawk, Assassin, Archer, Rifleman, Annihilator and an original Mech the Bull Shark. Oh and the Warhammer and Marauder were added for free as part of the attendant patch. New weapons, LBXs, Ultra ACs, Snubnose PPCs, COIL weapons (a weird sort of laser that charges up with movement), Inferno SRMs (as a unique weapon type), the Thumper and the Mech Mortar. Also added a Flashpoint "mini-campaign" where you will encounter the Bounty Hunter and "The Black Widow" Natasha Kerensky.

So, I'm not sure if a "clash of the Titans" mission type existed before Heavy Metal, but basically five missions into the campaign while I'm fielding just mechs I got in the beginning, I get into a two skull where two assaults and some locusts are fighting each other. After they beat each other up enough, I ended up incapacitating the pilot without destroying the actual mech, somehow.
My Lance of a COIL-equipped Assassin, Panther, and Blackjack is now led by a loving King Crab, after like 20 in game days. This expansion loving rules

To expand:

1) Flashpoint is basically required. It's awesome and is the real game now.

2) Urban Warfare is the DLC that gets poo poo on a bit. The ECM mechanic isn't great. The extra mechs are nice but not strictly necessary. Still, it's a decent little contact pack. The urban biome is worth the price of admission by itself and the new flashpoints are nice too.

3) the newest one and it's pretty drat awesome so far. Basically fleshing out the weapons and adding new mechs. A must have if you're a old grog who gets weak in the knees about the unseen, but still just fun.

If you only get one, get Flashpoint. If you only get two, I'd probably grab Flashpoint and Heavy Metal. Still, all three makes a loving nice package.

I disagree with their choice of milestone, I like running around the galaxy in a Leopard. Makes more sense narratively for me that you'd kind of have to be at least a little established before you get hired to fight an entire war against a usurper king, but you do you.
