This is the common rhetorical device of inspiring humour through subverted expectations. A play on the typical 'all middle aged white men are frothing fascists' opinion that is so common on da yoofs social medias.

Ms Adequate posted:I mean tbh it sounds to me like Lord_Hambone is partway there and in a year from now they'll be posting about how they used to be a milquetoast who thought capitalism had good parts/was worth reforming but now they want to overthrow Chief Commissar McDonnell for being too soft on middle class. I don't think a post capitalism world would necessarily be a hellish nightmare, but I just think capitalism correctly constrained is the optimal system. People still have concrete reasons to work hard and be more productive, but with a good fair safety net in place (I personally think UBI is a good method because it is very equal) people who can't or choose not to work can still survive with some comfort as artists or what have you. OwlFancier posted:Perhaps there are other motivators for why people might work other than to become a millionaire, perhaps there are motivators for people to work that does not result in them having a position of power over other people? I agree with this absolutely, I even do so in the text you quoted. You are absolutely correct to say that people are influenced by what they read and what ideas they are exposed to. A lack of education is always going to lead to problems with an electorate, and I certainly agree that all government school should be totally free (like any other utility). I think this thread always overestimates how much the average person actually cares about any given societal or political problem. Spangly A posted:It's not a coincidence that none of the world's biggest companies pay taxes, it is an inevitability. Multinationals, especially ones based on non-productive capital, are not reliant on any specific infrastructure to maintain profits. Many of them don't even make obvious (to the taxman) profits. Some simply don't make any money. These are exactly the changes that need to be made. Corporations need to pay more. Spangly A posted:If you're willing to stop the blatantly unethical parasitism of our economy, then how far do you even have left until socialism? If we are to go that far, why not further? what good even exists here? Socialised things can be very good, but you surely can tell the difference between medical care and t-shirts? I see nothing unethical about someone like a doctor with an extremely valuable specialized skill set having more income than others, but I do think it is unethical for everyone not to have access to medical care. OwlFancier posted:Posadism, in brief, is the idea that we need to destroy capitalism through the process of worldwide nuclear war, and also that aliens are real, have visited earth, and thus are by necessity, communists. And once we destroy capitalism with nuclear war the aliens will come and give us the space communism. Finally something sensible out of this thread. Trotsky would be proud.

First day of the UCU strike! We're a bit isolated from other, more 'excitable' branches down here in Falmouth, but we had some good reactions from passers by and students. Especially positive reactions from bus drivers! Note, this is Exeter University's campus in Cornwall. Falmouth University itself is not striking.

Lord_Hambrose posted:people who can't or choose not to work can still survive with some comfort as artists or what have you. This will never be possible under capitalism. Capitalism is an ideology that demands maximum production by using maximum resources therefore it expects every human to be a worker. However the majority of work under capitalism is unfulfilling and causes misery and therefore people will not choose to work under capitalism if they can avoid it. Workers are only produced by coercion through the withholding of basic survival needs unless you sell your labour. Capitalism ensures that you cannot survive if you don't engage with the system. You can try to restrict that through regulation but capitalism will always push against that because it naturally trends towards its destructive tendencies. Capitalism will never sit back and say 'this is good enough' because as an ideology of greed it always demands more than you had before. To expect otherwise is naivety.

I'm not sure how you contain capitalism when at it's core it's only interested extracting surplus capital by exploiting the workers in increasingly "innovative"/cruel ways

I'd probably say of the ones I'm familiar with from that group I like the xenofeminist option best but that's because that is directly revolutionary. It is a direct attack on the existing power structure and its destruction leaves the innnate chaos of humanity to flourish in its absence. Which I think is different from making capitalism more powerful in the hopes it will become less powerful and that what will replace it will not be another, bad system. I think there are major differences in the character of the action taken and in the likely outcomes afterwards. To the point I don't think I'd really describe it as accelerationist? It's really is just a direct attack on the bad thing. Gender accelerationism would be, gently caress I dunno, instituting even more draconian gender rules in the hope that gender anarchists will appear to smash them. It'd make TERFs the accelerationists.

I think there are plenty of reasons to work and improve things independent of the motive of profit/threat of destitution provided by capitalism. Most or all of those reasons have been around a lot longer than capitalism, and they'll still be there long after capitalism is gone. One of my favourite examples is Jonas Salk, who invented the first polio vaccine and saw that it was rolled out as widely as possible. That required, to say the least, a substantial effort. Had he retained the intellectual property rights and pursued a profit, he would have become astoundingly wealthy. Yet instead, he made it all freely available. Why did he do that, and why did he keep working knowing there would be no profit? To improve the lives of his fellow man; to meet an urgent need; to change the game for the better, forever. The idea of the profit motive as the prime motivator of human action is an ideological assumption of neoliberal economic models, in which people are inherently motivated by rational self-interest. For better or worse, human beings in reality are driven to action by many things besides that, and often much more strongly too.
