poverty goat posted:I used to bank with a local bank that was eventually consumed by wells fargo. One of their innovations when they took over is that for purposes of calculating overdrafts, they would process all of your debits in a day in descending order. So let's say you've got $50 in your account, and you go out and spend one dollar 49 times, and then you buy something for $51, overdrawing your account. They'd process it as though the $51 charge came first, charge you a $30 overdraft fee on it, and then charge you a $30 overdraft fee on each of the other 49 charges. Ah, Murica, where account with possibility of unarranged overdraft is the default somehow.

Apparently in Australia we can have one of our largest banks get caught for 23million counts of money laundering but they still didn't charge me an overdraft when I had my mortgage payment come out without enough money. I noticed the same day and transferred money instantly from another account to cover the shortfall before end of day settlement.

Accumulating real wealth is actually really boring; it takes sacrifice and decades of investing. Most people get stuck at the "I deserve this new thing" and never get past the credit card debt stage or taking out a secured loan for stupid poo poo that won't matter in ten years. tldr: accumulating real wealth is a very long game that most people simply don't have the patience for, even though the rules are really simple. tango alpha delta fucked around with this message at 16:58 on Nov 25, 2019 |

It's very possible for you to become a millionaire in your fifties or sixties. That's a lot of not eating out or owning the latest iPhone though. Don't take my word for it, though, it's just a simple math problem. No financial windfall is needed or inheritance, just sacrifice and time. Lots of time. The younger you are, the better to invest. It is very difficult to wait until you are fifty when you have to have that new whatever, but denying yourself makes all the difference in the world. tango alpha delta fucked around with this message at 17:29 on Nov 25, 2019 |
