There's at least one that's like "this old guy claims to have fought in every important mech fight ever, but he's also crazy and probably a liar. You're hiring him because he can shoot well anyway." so they aren't ALL bad, just most.

Shinsei Ohbayashi was born to a middle-class family in the Federated Suns, under the name Michael Woods. He grew up loyal to House Davion, as every child did. He even attended the Robinson Battle Academy, where his loyalty to House Davion was complemented by indoctrination with the hatred for the Draconis Combine so common in Robinson graduates.

But Michael Woods never graduated from Robinson Battle Academy. During a live fire exercise one bleak night, something unspeakable happened. He was cut off, abandoned, and 'Michael Woods' never emerged from those dark woods. Shinsei Ohbayashi did instead. In one bloody instant, everything he'd been taught his entire life inverted. It was the Draconis Combine that understood the right way of living, the correct approach to battle. The evil of the Federated Suns could not be overstated.

At first, he made an effort to rescue his loved ones from the same blindness he'd been victim of. But after they rejected him rather than listen, he left the Federated Suns, fleeing before they could hunt him down. Now, he considers himself a loyal servant of House Kurita, and hopes via service to the Draconis Combine to become worthy of a place in their ranks. Meanwhile, he keeps his skills -and his hatred-sharp by working as a mercenary out in the Periphery, for whoever will hire him.

Also since most of the art for the OCs was based off the submitted backer mugs, the list is of course filled with fat white dudes - plus 3 redheads and 2 asian warrior princesses.

Logistics is the official explanation I think? A Mech with hands can help pack up it's own ammo and other supplies when it's time to move the dropship again, and can do that rapidly without any reconfiguring.

Plus, how are you going to flip off your enemy if you don't have hands? Or play Mech-scale football?

The Shadow Hawk gets an extra strong melee attack because it has two free hands.

I did a fun pirate flashpoint, it was for a tournament! You didn't get to use your own mechs, oh no, that's too simple. You got assigned mechs, the most fearsome mechs of all.

The Urbanmech. It was fun. Not really challenging by any measure but it helped make things so more alive.

So i've been waiting to play this a bit to see how it shapes up with all the final dlc and stuff.

Are there any super crucial mods/quality of life changes that need to happen? I took a break after launch (no dlc) because making all the robots move less slow with ini edits was a pain, and wanted to wait for thigns to shake out. Are most of the quality of life hacks part of the base game? Are there any

So far I want to change a few things:
I'd like to play the campaign with flashpoints on, but I think I know how to do that.
Are there any mod settings to make you have more 'pips' to spend in your contract negotiations?
Where do you change how many mech parts it takes to salvage a design?

Are there any 'its totally dumb you can't loot/take this with you' mechs from campaign/story stuff that I should change? (i remember people saying random things about royal mechs or something)

Is the forced difficulty boost at each milestone still at thing? The mechanic that forces endgame stuff to be 'all assaults all the time' with no backsies.
This.

Do flashpoints or other dlc stuff need out of the box tweaking?

Am I forgetting anything else?

Edit: Any weapon fixes also crucial? AC/2, ppc heat, that sort of thing?
Are harder ai tweaks still needed? I remember that was a fairly popular mod as well

4 Firestarters is the correct choice because Lights are Tougher Than Assaults. Well, at least 4 Firestarters with good pilots, custom loadouts and great tactics. I don't think i could have beaten 7 Heavies and 5 Heavy Turrets myself tho.

Edit: Explanation and math is the first 15 mins. It takes an hour and half for 4 Firestarters to kill all that poo poo and not lose equipment.

As for in-universe, I figure it's just an accurate projection of what the military-industrial complex will look like after another 500 years.
"I don't get it."
"What?"
"That."
"It's the Mackie."
"Well, if that's the Mackie, then what's this?"
"What's the date?"
"2368."
"The question is, how did they get to that..." *points to picture of robot with legs*
"from this?" *holds up picture of normal tank*

I think the idea behind mechs is that they have fusion engines which are light and provide huge amounts of energy for pretty much free but require a large amount of volume and cannot be further miniaturized. So they're too bulky to actually fit in a tracked or wheeled platform with a reasonable width. Thus, legs.

So tanks are cheaper but have more limited strategic mobility since they need to be transported around by trains or by air, whereas mechs can run from place to place? Or something?

Chevrons, regardless of how, as long as you're not jumping.

I put an -M on a Wolverine, I can get it to 4 pips for 100 dmg with the right pilot. It does pretty decent work outside of Martian/Lunar environs

My gut says that their financials are pretty good given that they've had three solid DLC releases, on-time, and with a high degree of polish. A sinking ship doesn't seem like it'd pull things off like that. I would wager that the gate to a sequel is a motivational one, not a financial one.

The DLC might be solid but payout from that is based on three things: Base game sale multipliers (how many people who bought the main game, which I never heard touted as a big seller), time dropoff (how long its been since the release of the main game affects dlc sale numbers), and in this particular game's case, HBS have a deal with Paradox where they have to reach a certain number of DLC sales to see an extra profit beyond a base sum they get paid on completion.

also depending on how many season pass buyers there were, how solid the later DLCs turned out might not actually move the needle all that much.

The good QoL mods are still mostly waiting for updates. SkipIntro mostly works though.

a. Campaign flashpoints
b. Just use the difficulty settings menu and set contract pay and/or salvage to generous. Functionally the same thing.
c. Also in difficulty settings, but only when you first start a campaign or career.

quote:

Is the forced difficulty boost at each milestone still at thing? The mechanic that forces endgame stuff to be 'all assaults all the time' with no backsies.
This.
That should still work, but honestly the better answer is to play career mode instead of campaign mode. In career the skull rating never changes and the IS is unlocked from the start, so the complete range of 0.5 skull to 5 skull is always available. Now that career exists the campaign is like play it quick for the story, don't keep playing after it ends.

quote:

Edit: Any weapon fixes also crucial? AC/2, ppc heat, that sort of thing?
Nope. AC/2 is still a bit sucky but it sucks more for the AI than the player (AC/2 stab++ isn't a bad gun).
