I see. So it’s kind of like the US popular vote in that respect? Like with +5pts in britain wide polling, a couple points of that could go into juicing Corbyn and Abbott’s margins or something? But also wouldn’t -5pts from GE2017 also make labour a lot more likely to lose the ultra marginals like Canterbury or Kensington? Or is the result in those not so necessary to the hung parliament status?

I've not been responding by rolling my eyes back into my head and doing the Bodysnatcher squeal, so don't worry about about me appearing in the local rag next to an aggrieved pensioner who only wants to herd the foreigns into the North Sea. Mostly wanted to sanity check what I'm doing. Honestly I try to sow the seed of doubt but I've got a much lower threshold for disengaging and moving on than some fellas. I'm on firmer ground hunting centrists and they're-all-the-same types. someone who goes off in a rant like that, there's no way you're changing their mind during a quick doorstep session. best you can hope for is yeah, sowing some doubts (and maybe discouraging them from bothering if they're voting right wing) but otherwise save your time and emotional energy for others maybe ask some of the other canvassers how they quickly disengage and move on, there's a skill in assertively bringing it to a close with a positive message, so you can just leave without seeming aggressive or like you're running away. Wont work on everyone, but if someone's still ranting at that point there's no shame in walking away. Just try and think of it like a task you need to complete, you're not having personal conversations, y'know?

If you enjoy it next time you could consider going to Putney or Dagenham - Milani gets loads of volunteers (which makes it a good starter location) because of the profile of the seat, but there are other (more neglected) London marginals that Labour needs to form a government. twoot fucked around with this message at 21:22 on Nov 30, 2019 |

Oh dear me posted:Noooooo! I mean yes ok serious thinking always good I suppose, but please let us not think serious thoughts like 'oh god we have failed and must Do Something'. I mean why I say "do something" it's less "give up all hope" & more "thank Jeremy for his hard work and have him step aside for a younger leader leader who is every bit as radical". I'm sure the new Labour leader will just be as savagely attacked for the most innocent things, but at least there will be slightly less baggage, & a chance for a reset. The fundamental principles I supported when I was 16 & socialism was thought of as long dead, The End of History & all that pish, I'll still be a socialist till the day I die I'd imagine. All that's really changed is my stance on more of a freedom/totalitarianism scale than the inequality/equality scale and that's because I really didn't even know jot about anarchism, the only time it was ever mentioned is when some big meanies in all black would smash up shop windows on May Day.

I assume the new policy will be 2nd ref BUT WE CAMPAIGN FOR REMAIN now that corbyn has given them a face saving niche to backtrack into. the best part is Revoke is their main position even though they have no hope of forcing it, so they positioned a second ref as being like a consolation prize they don't actually want. And because they've publicly ruled out working with Corbyn so many times because of their parliamentary shenanigans, everyone assumes their realistic pitch to everyone is "vote for us and we'll try to get a second referendum, on Boris's deal" with all the support that implies pretty amazing achievement to be the worst option for Remain AND Leave voters
