It is possible but very difficult, because each major house has a flashpoint you can only do when you ally with them. When you ally with a faction their enemies hate you. And they don't reset to being chill when you break the alliance. So you have to grind 1/2 skull missions to work your rep back up.

Literally faster to play multiple careers in order to see everything.

It's been a while since I didn't just ally with the Davion/Marik/Centrella trifecta but some of them, from what I remember, are just straight not worth allying with. Steiner's faction store was located on an abandoned world the last time I allied them, which was just a giant gently caress you.

Yeah as long as you complete at least one objective it counts as a good faith effort and you still get paid most of the agreed amount.

I've been playing the game off and on since launch, and I've never managed to make it far into a career mode, and I have a real dumb question.

I understand that there is +/- 1 skull variability on contract difficulties. However, I try to match my tonnage symbols that I can deploy to these contract difficulties. Is that how I am supposed to interpret this?

I know I still have plenty to learn on tactics and abilities (I still rarely use the special abilities that you spend resolve for) but I keep thinking I'm doing something wrong on just selecting contracts.

Unless you need speed (there are only a few very specific missions that do) you should use your heaviest, most capable 'mechs for every mission.

Just got the bullshark, and, uhm, wow. Probably gonna distribute some of those good guns elsewhere, it doesn't need that many... I really should have written down where I saw LBX and UAC guns for sale, too. Not that I ever saw anything bigger than a UAC/2.

Well, got a few snubby's, and I like that gun, so I guess I am happy?

Also I guess that's our preview of clan loadouts?

Yeah the flashpoint Bull Shark is almost unbelievably good. I ended up swapping the LBXs for more UACs and it just pours AC rounds downrange. I neither know nor care if that was an optimal choice but it blows things up real good so

I stole a bunch of stuff off it for other mechs and still had a bajillion firepower plus the thumper.

Basically yes. You can safely go 1/2 star under (full star when you get more experienced).

Note that there are deliberately some "bad intel" contacts, but not to many to worry about.

The fact that gauss rifles always hit structure makes them amazing for plinking at otherwise fresh heavy or assault mechs that carry torso mounted ammo. Any given shot has decent odds of ripping off a side torso thanks to an ammo explosion.

Ok, so the next question is do you actually hear the fans working hard? (Or if you're using a monitor, are they spun up to max?) Because it could be that a less demanding game produces hotter temps, because the GPU doesn't need to run the fans as much to deal with a game that's only using like 20% of it's capacity.

Like, if your GPU isn't in the upper 80s or 90s then it's fine. Relax. You have the best video card in the world and you paid at least a grand for it. You shouldn't need to baby it and constantly monitor temps. Nvidia is smarter about making video chips than us, all these cards run themselves now. My advice would be to start ignoring that stuff unless you're either hearing too much fan noise or seeing performance problems.

Yeah your right, it's not like it's running bad or anything. It's doing it's job and I'm worrying about nothing really.

I really need to make friends with the pirates, saw another Bull Shark for sell and a piece for one.

Later on did a mission where the enemy had one. I did not expect that.

AFAIK the +/- 1 skull is for contracts being generated. Like a 4 skull planet can have missions anywhere from 3 to 5.

What makes missions themselves highly variable is the selection system for enemy mechs having a lot of randomness to it. A Dragon and an Orion are way different in how tough they are to fight, but if the game is looking for a Heavy-Tank-Brawler it could pick either one. And then you get into randomness of whether the dice pick a team that has synergy or a grab-bag of misfits.

There are definitely missions that have tough objectives or nasty surprises which will be really hard the first time you see them.

Oh geez you really want to be using those, they're extremely powerful.

The early part of the game you should be building morale as fast as possible using generous pay, while your salaries are still cheap due to less skilled pilots. The top bar of company morale means you generate enough resolve to use those abilities practically every turn. Don't dump money into the argo right away in career mode, those upgrades all increase your bills.

all the new cluster guns combine with urban warfare's maps and the stray shots mechanic in an extremely satisfying way. i was laughing my rear end off when some LBX pellets took out the side torso of a locust further down the street from my intended target

Okay I've just realised the weird slightly counter-intuitive thing about the career mode, which is that if you need to build up a cash pile in the early game the trick is not to try and climb the difficulty ladder as quickly as possible, but to go back to a 1-skull planet because you'll be able to sweep through all of the contracts in one day without taking any structure damage.

Hey baby I think we Havel lot in common
I played the game campaign through and then started a career when I was done with that, and, at the time, I thought the game was a bit "bare bones" as far as features are concerned. I quit playing to wait for the DLC to come out. I just started playing again in a new campaign and I've seen a few new mechs (Vulcan, Crab, Black Knight, Flea, and a couple others I can't remember right now), and I'm impressed with the obvious work that's made the game more fun to play, but I haven't seen a whole lot of the new content (Flashpoint scenarios, urban environments, anything in Heavy Metal). Will I run into these after I finish the campaign again? Or will I have to leave the are of space the campaign takes place in? There doesn't seem to be a good wiki out there with information on the DLC stuff.

And Smithson is as much of a ballbreaker as I remember it to be. I wish I would have recorded this.

Edit: This reddit thread answered my question. https://old.reddit.com/r/Battletechgame/comments/e4hil0/end_of_campaign_mode_vs_career/

Flashpoints don't appear in the campaign until after you beat the story.

If you want to jump into all the DLC content, you need to play the Career mode. After a few in-game days, you'll start seeing notifications for flashpoints.
