We showed up a little after 9 right in time for the Parry vs McDonald fight which was perfect imo because the card went on quite awhile and the rest of the undercard looked pretty trash. The upside of the event being thinly attended and long was that security didn't give a gently caress and we walked down to seats incredibly close to the ring a few matches in. Every fight we saw was awesome except for Gerges vs Inocente.

The World Sanda championships are going on now in Shanghai. In honor of Duncan who thought the matches were really entertaining, I'll wade through and post stuff I think is cool. For now, here's a guy I fought in 2016 (and got handled by his throws and overall wrestling): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAK-Ld7hW44&t=14959s McKenzie is fighting pretty much how he did 2 years ago -- not a very active striker but likes the lead kick, good at timing into a takedown if you telegraph a committed kick, doesn't really care about distance cuz his tie-up is really good, likes to stall out from there. Not super fast, but he looks faster here than against me. His opponent is on the low end of the skill spectrum for worlds, and McKenzie's kick catch counters could have won him the fight pretty handily, but he just left off the gas in the 3rd in crucial moments. That's sort of sanda for you -- the lead can change very quickly without you spending a lot of energy or even hurting your opponent. Funny enough, he got counted on a groin kick just like I did on my first fight.

Blue traps the lead hand under her armpit, using the bulk and texture of the glove as a handle, and then keeps her other arm free to reap the leg as she throws red over her back. Fight goes into round 3 (so tied 1-1) and coming to the end of the round very close. Each fighter is trying to find one winning exchange to take the round. Red throws a lead round kick to try to hit the body without much engagement, but it's too telegraphed. Blue catches the heel, feints the punch to the head and steps in to kick out the red's support leg, but comes up short as red hops back. This is a good showcase fight. ok, finally got back to watching. The kid from the US was pretty mediocre when I last went to nationals, but he developed enough to take his weight class. Just not nearly enough for the world stage.
