I was contracted to do an analysis of a city's legal weed market; they wanted advice on best paths forward and how to reduce the illegal market efficiently. When I gave a presentation to the city manager and explained that the best course forward to keep the industry alive and growing would be a reduction or restructuring of the city's cannabis tax rate the manager looked at me like I'd grown a second head. They also tried to claim that the city is bound by statute to charge what they're charging (they aren't, the statute says the city may apply a tax "up to" a certain amount, naturally they have it set to the maximum permissible). But it was pretty clear I was supposed to come in and tell them they were doing everything correctly and that they should even be charging more than they are, and they weren't thrilled when that wasn't my answer.

These short-sighted boomer idiots are going to strangle the legal market completely so they can smugly claim that they were right to tell us that legalization was a bad idea and then they're going to turn around and try to dump more money on the cops to "solve" the black market issue. It's infuriating.
