tango alpha delta posted:Steam and Game Pass Ultimate are so loving inexpensive that piracy for me is not really a thing anymore. For me piracy was mostly about being completely broke, but wanting to play some cool poo poo back in the day. Cracking copy protection was also a lot of fun. I found more than one message hidden in the game code basically telling pirates to gently caress off. That's understandable but there are some games that aren't on steam or game pass or take more than the 2 hour steam grace period to get a good feel for ChazTurbo fucked around with this message at 18:55 on Dec 3, 2019 |

I'm not sure what the refund policy is on App Store games, for example. At the end of the day this is a first world problem in one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world. No one has ever died from NOT playing a video game. To get back on track, Alien Blackout is actually pretty good. tango alpha delta fucked around with this message at 19:29 on Dec 3, 2019 |

Oh to once more download a keygenerator exe that not only magics up a code for your pirated game but also plays a wicked cool MID while doing so. That's A+ customer service.

On the few occasions I did pirate games I ended up buying them anyway (on sale), I don't really bother now as unless it's something I'm megahype for like DMC5 I wait til it's under £20

Yeah, I pirated a lot more when I was young but now I have money so I feel guilty if I don't. Still not gonna go up someone's rear end if they do though. My Unpopular Videogame Opinion: I unironically enjoy achievements and such in games and prefer games to have them, to the point where with my massive backlog I tend to skip over games that don't have them.

Just admit you don't want to give Disney $60 to play/watch Star Wars. No one but the most slack-jawed, mouse hat wearing Brand Slave or pocket-protector owning fan of The Rules will give you poo poo for that. Also for a while there it was easier/more reliable to pirate games from like the mid 90's than to use the crappy installation media that still floats around for them.

The lengths publishers went to to inconvenience and spy on paying customers in the name of copy protection in the 90s and 2000s were by themselves justification for piracy.

Doom Rooster posted:This is a great summation and analogy. As long as you ignore the fact that the main motivation for people actually creating said information is money. i never said it wasn't. i said we need to figure out a better system; which would obviously involve paying people to create new content. the vast majority of commercial content creators do not own the copyright to their own work, they are hired by companies and paid a salary just like everyone else. university professors (you know, the people who create the actual important information) do not own the copyright on the papers they publish and typically don't get patents for their research either. these people are not being motivated by the copyright system directly, so they could be just as easily motivated by some other payment system. indy game developers and book authors interact with copyright directly, but they too could use a different system. kickstarter allows people to pay for media they want to be created ahead of time, and Patreon allows people to give creative types a regular salary in exchange for the work they do. better systems are easily possible, and the fact that we are not looking for ways to scrap copyright makes it morally bankrupt

But it's more like "Diplomacy and a bunch of other stupid poo poo I've changed but haven't even bothered to mention in the readme". gently caress you, mod makers who do that.

I sorta remember this kind of stuff with all the STALKER series mods. Any time someone would collect a bunch into a pack, there would always be a handful of really unfun mods added, occasionally without descriptions. All that said, CoP is still the most i've been into a game besides Destiny 1, and even the lovely mods can turn it into a newish game. And I just took a look at ModDB, and people are still pumping out content for that game. There's a shitton of new mods, so looks like I need to dive back in!
