We get decent numbers, 10-20 a lot of the time, but we're expected to go alone unless we're new. I did one session with a pair and then got sent alone. Mostly I just get flustered easily because I'm pestering people in their homes and I think a lot of people find me quite intimidating.

my dad is pretty heavily involved with a lot of the big homeless charities, their advice under new labour was to not give money to people on the street because it was better spent by giving it to homeless organisations to get them off the street.
the tories dont give a single gently caress about the homeless so now all the organisations are unfunded and powerless. when my dad last met the chair of one of them he gave money to a guy on the street and said "he can spend it better"

Yeah, standard practice is to pair up beginners but I've seen people work as a pair because they felt more comfortable that way due to anxiety, so it's worth asking I'd say.

Sometimes this can come from a good place, as collective bargaining increases purchasing power in the abstract. (in practice that's only true when the group is small enough that primate social mechanisms enforce fairness, of course.)

I, too, think people should just give money to people who need it, if and when they can.

Went out leafleting today. I think I prefer canvassing honestly. Had one guy get in my face to shout that Corbyn was the biggest bigot he’d ever seen in his life.
Most people were Xmas shopping and weren’t interested. Didn’t help that Jehovah’s Witnesses set up next to us about 45 minutes later either, I thought.

Hey, I’m not discouraged. Just glad it’s back to canvassing tomorrow - a bit quieter and friendlier.

lol, reminds me attending group therapy some years back and bringing up financial difficulties ('cause, surprise, they're not very conducive to a healthy state of mind) at one point; our (very middle-class, same as the rest of that group) counselor, after an awkward pause, tried recommending some budgeting apps. I had to explain I was actually pretty good at managing money when I had it; it's more the earning enough money to be able to afford a luxury of budgeting beyond "Rent, transport, then hope you have enough left over to feed yourself" that was the problem. Still remember everyone looking at me kinda uncomprehendingly.

That year I ended up having a tooth removed b/c I had a root canal infection that I couldn't afford getting fixed, then going to work on the same day b/c I couldn't afford missing it. Spent the entire shift (was working in a pub at the time) trying to speak as little as possible due to the prospect of spewing blood every time I opened my mouth.

They're not scrapping it, they're expanding it to other couples (civil partnerships and the like). It's a broader tax break, not a narrower one.

Bit tepid, tbh. Worth it if you've got nothing better to do I suppose.

Boris has been run out of yet another campaigning area by a bunch of protestors. Let's compare and contrast BBC and the Graun.

Graun posted:

Boris Johnson has abandoned a walkabout in Westhoughton, Lancashire, after about 100 protesters took to the town’s high street along with a large screen with a photo of the prime minister with Donald Trump.

“Have they just done the UK’s biggest drug deal?” it asked.

The PM had planned to meet voters in the marginal Bolton West constituency, taken by the Tories’ Chris Green in 2015 after holding off Labour’s Julie Hilling by just 936 votes in 2017.

But after the Tory battle bus arrived in town it was decided that the visit should be abandoned, amid the presence of protesters.

The demonstrators, some of whom were the Socialist Worker newspaper and holding banners saying “No to Racism, No to Boris Johnson”, had lined the high street where the walkabout was expected to take place.

Instead, Johnson travelled back to London by car after his trip to the North West on Saturday and his battle bus also headed south.

BBC posted:

Johnson event cancelled because of security concerns

The Tories' "Get Brexit Done" bus came into Bolton, drove around for a bit and then left again.

Boris Johnson was meant to be doing a walkabout in Westhoughton, part of the marginal Tory held seat of Bolton West.

But because of security concerns the event’s been cancelled.

The same happened in Rochester yesterday.

Tory sources say the police have the final say and that security considerations determine what happens. But party strategists will be glad to swerve potential protesters and hecklers too.

Yep, total normal state media broadcaster fulfilling the public interest mandate. Nothing to see here, ignore the huge crowds of protestors everywhere.

The tax break only applies to traditional housewives who stay at home and don't earn much. Does that reflect modern society? Why shouldn't cohabiting couples, or couples where both parents work get a level playing field. And by scrapping this minor tax rebate, Labour can instead provide properly funded childcare and surestart centres for everyone.

There's been some great articles about the ratio level of middle-and-upper versus working-class actors in Britain and how systematic and hosed the lack of opportunities available to the latter is.

E: Here's one based on BSA research even - 'Class ceiling' stops working class actors from getting parts'

quote:

When they went to auditions, their working class accents told against them. Jimmy told the researchers: "One of my lecturers said to me 'have you ever considered going back and being a plumber?'
