Mostly I just get flustered easily because I'm pestering people in their homes and I think a lot of people find me quite intimidating.

Had Julian Huppert come canvassing for the new Lib Dem candidate. It was kind of embarrassing to basically go "no I can't vote for the Lib Dems and it's your fault." But on the other hand, it was kind of a relief to be able to do so.

(in practice that's only true when the group is small enough that primate social mechanisms enforce fairness, of course.) I, too, think people should just give money to people who need it, if and when they can.

I hope it'll lift the thread's spirits a bit to know my mum's voting Labour. She's not a fan of Corbyn but she loving hated the Tories and wants something to change, although she's pessimistic about it. The stuff I've picked up from the thread and the discord has definitely helped me when talking to her about stuff like this, so thank you very much and keep fighting, comrades.

lol, reminds me attending group therapy some years back and bringing up financial difficulties ('cause, surprise, they're not very conducive to a healthy state of mind) at one point; our (very middle-class, same as the rest of that group) counselor, after an awkward pause, tried recommending some budgeting apps. I had to explain I was actually pretty good at managing money when I had it; it's more the earning enough money to be able to afford a luxury of budgeting beyond "Rent, transport, then hope you have enough left over to feed yourself" that was the problem. Still remember everyone looking at me kinda uncomprehendingly. That year I ended up having a tooth removed b/c I had a root canal infection that I couldn't afford getting fixed, then going to work on the same day b/c I couldn't afford missing it. Spent the entire shift (was working in a pub at the time) trying to speak as little as possible due to the prospect of spewing blood every time I opened my mouth.

It's a "gotcha!" edge case that doesn't address the substantive issue and will be more than made up by the restoration of all the other social security that has been cut over the last decade.

Boris has been run out of yet another campaigning area by a bunch of protestors. Let's compare and contrast BBC and the Graun. Graun posted:Boris Johnson has abandoned a walkabout in Westhoughton, Lancashire, after about 100 protesters took to the town’s high street along with a large screen with a photo of the prime minister with Donald Trump. BBC posted:Johnson event cancelled because of security concerns Yep, total normal state media broadcaster fulfilling the public interest mandate. Nothing to see here, ignore the huge crowds of protestors everywhere. Debbie Does Dagon posted:So I'm taking to someone who just tried to use Corbyn scrapping the married tax allowance as a gotcha, because it'll affect lower income couples. Any advice on what to reply with? The tax break only applies to traditional housewives who stay at home and don't earn much. Does that reflect modern society? Why shouldn't cohabiting couples, or couples where both parents work get a level playing field. And by scrapping this minor tax rebate, Labour can instead provide properly funded childcare and surestart centres for everyone.
