Yeah Labour are scrapping it.

The counter point to the complaint about that is things like free prescriptions, cheaper rail, eventually free broadband, free dental checkups, raise in minimum wage etc etc means they get far more back in their pocket than the MAXIMUM 250 quid they'd lose. This is where the bullshit "Labour are going to tax people on 20 grand a year" is coming from.

just had to travel 2 hours into london to see a specialist for my son's autism, and it's a private clinic because the local nhs place is so understaffed we got shipped out here because otherwise the wait would have been 18 months to 2 years rather than the year or so we already had to wait

Last ultrasound I had, I could have gone to a private place for them to bill the nhs a bunch rather than the local hospital

The entire phlebotomy department at the local hospital is run by a private firm

Paying firms to provide services the nhs should be covering themselves cheaper

For instance, in Exeter instead of the usual food bank fare & jacket potatoes, we're getting a hog roast in and other goodies.

Honestly, I didn't think I'd vote again after that crap, fortunately this thread and other people helped change my mind, and the chance for a proper left wing government seemed like something to aim for.

I mean, I get it. The first time I was pointed to my privilege I hand-waved it because I'm working class mate, we get shat on all the time, but then you think about it a little and you go "yeah, actually I suppose as a white male there's a whole lot of poo poo I don't have to deal with that a woman does or a non-cis person or a darker skinned person" & then I got it. But until it's pointed out it's something you really won't have considered and so you'll probably deny it exists. Introspection isn't a natural state for most people until they are put a position to do it. Honestly, & I could be biased from my own experience here, but I think how you react a month or 6 months after having your privilege pointed out matters more than how you do out the very first time it is.

I had to explain I was actually pretty good at managing money when I had it; it's more the earning enough money to be able to afford a luxury of budgeting beyond "Rent, transport, then hope you have enough left over to feed yourself" that was the problem. Still remember everyone looking at me kinda uncomprehendingly.

That year I ended up having a tooth removed b/c I had a root canal infection that I couldn't afford getting fixed, then going to work on the same day b/c I couldn't afford missing it. Spent the entire shift (was working in a pub at the time) trying to speak as little as possible due to the prospect of spewing blood every time I opened my mouth.

Was thinking this when I got locked out a few days ago. It cost me £65 to get in again. I was able to wave credit card about. Imagine if I'd been on UC or something - how the heck would I have done it. Same with any kind of extra unexpected expense, can completely knock your budget for six.

They're not scrapping it, they're expanding it to other couples (civil partnerships and the like). It's a broader tax break, not a narrower one.

To be fair that is not mentioned in 'the grey book' or elsewhere. As it is listed as a way of costing their manifesto, replacing it with a broader tax break doesn't in that context make sense.
I get the point that the improvements elsewhere will more than make up for it, but as it stands that is not clear.

Yep, total normal state media broadcaster fulfilling the public interest mandate. Nothing to see here, ignore the huge crowds of protestors everywhere.

The tax break only applies to traditional housewives who stay at home and don't earn much. Does that reflect modern society? Why shouldn't cohabiting couples, or couples where both parents work get a level playing field. And by scrapping this minor tax rebate, Labour can instead provide properly funded childcare and surestart centres for everyone.

The BBC has posted a follow-up that admits that it was protesters, but the wording of the original is extremely strange.

quote:

Johnson event cancelled because of security concerns

Ben Wright
BBC political correspondent

The Tories' "Get Brexit Done" bus came into Bolton, drove around for a bit and then left again.

Boris Johnson was meant to be doing a walkabout in Westhoughton, part of the marginal Tory held seat of Bolton West.

But because of security concerns the event’s been cancelled.

The same happened in Rochester yesterday.

Tory sources say the police have the final say and that security considerations determine what happens. But party strategists will be glad to swerve potential protesters and hecklers too.

A lot of local Labour Party branches are used to 4 or 5 people turning up to canvass, and suddenly they have 40 or 50. I've had to take over organising a couple of times to keep things moving.

There are also more young activists than I've ever seen before. Normally I'm the youngest one in the room at 40, but this election I've often been one of the oldest.

With regards to optimism and election results, I always think that socialism is a process. There will always be another fight, another struggle, another reactionary tendency to counter, another issue that needs a solution. Whether we win or lose or draw, we must retain optimism because the job isn’t over. We all have to fight every day - occupy every space, champion the ideals and practice of socialism and hold everyone to account. From each to their ability holds true for all comrades all the time. Keep the faith, keep fighting, keep voting, keep looking after yourself and each other.
