I still believe in good. I still believe in Red. I still believe that one day the billionaires will have to pay their due. I might be dead by then, our lovely blue marble might be a blackened wreck but by golly when that first billionaires head slides into the hallowed arms of the guilliotine my spirit will whisper on the wind.

"OOoooooh Jeremy Corbyn."

the number one mistake socialists can make is assuming that, because their policies are better for the working class, the working class will support them. that requires class consciousness, that is, the understanding on the part of the working class that they are a distinct class with distinct interests. this consciousness has been deliberately hammered out of the working class internationally for decades, with the results that we see now. billionaires have class consciousness and vote in support of their material interests. the precariat have class consciousness and vote in support of their material interests (which now includes engineers, lawyers, doctors, and academics, because of how dire things have gotten). the working class do not, and the organs that usually spread class consciousness-- unions, socialist newspapers, and so on-- have been hollowed out. social media has encouraged atomization and individualism, but this has been going on for decades, and really there's no shortcut to O R G A N I Z I N G. organizing doesn't just mean door-knocking, it means building class consciousness and solidarity, and that means building unions. there's no way around it.

you can't just have a better platform and win that way. that's one required input, but you also need a class that's looking for a platform that benefits it, and without that a good platform is just screaming into the void.

this is a very good post

exactly. Trump winning didn't make people want obamacare repealed more. why would corbyn losing make every member of labor go "actually I LOVE the iraq war and having no future"

I can imagine turnout for the leadership election will be depressed though. The British left is going to be in a serious funk for a while.

If you centralize all your countrys well-paying jobs with good benefits in one or two cities then that means that far more people will try to live in those cities in order to obtain those jobs then that cities land and infrastructure can support causing prices rents and the cost-of-living to rise negating any extra salary those decent jibs provide. The end result being that the country, small towns, and small cities are cheap as hell but with no income to get a good living from that cheapness while the big cities have plenty of jobs but its so expensive that you still dont have a good living so everyone everywhere feels like they're poor and miserable. I sure am glad every single industrialized country has adopted this policy u can figure out is a bad idea in 2 seconds of thinking.

Sorta depends, might be for a bit, which is why I'd like Corbyn to pass over to some interim leader to placate the screaming (like fair enough, we did lose loving badly and its largely the fault of running the wrong campaign) while labour gets its poo poo together for a month or two and everyone slowly recovers, then a hearty leadership contest where everyone can make their case.

You accurately see the situation, but have inverted the conclusion. It's not bad, it's good: the worker is more precarious, more exploitable, and easier to extract from, they are split and more dependent then ever. Now normally this would mean these folks would be unable to afford an adequate standard of living, but if you stretch that system worldwide... creating tremendous downward pressure on certain goods, massive surplus labor populations focused on cities where the "industrial capitalism" went... folks maybe we can get some buy in, we may have something here.

Very much this. Brexit is happening and there's nothing anyone can do about it. I have no idea who should be the next Labour leader, but if any of the candidates even mentions doing another referendum they need to go the way of Old Yeller.

What the gently caress did "Dinner Boy going to eat his egg!" even mean? How was that a rallying cry for a political movement?

Apparently good boys at posh boarding schools get an (extra?) egg at dinner, a dinner egg. So Corbyn getting his dinner egg was just a joke about him getting his just reward for being good for ages in parliament. But alas.

Also I feel like this anti-Corbyn semtiment is missing the fact that you were lucky to even get Corbyn in the first place. If not for a joke by the Blairite faction neither he nor any leftist was in position to be leader ever. You needed Corbyn as leader of the party just to ensure there was a future for leftism in Labour. I'm sure there was a time when he could have been swapped out in the last 2 years, but given his great showing in 2017 that doesn't seem like a good idea in anything but hind-sight. He got poo poo on for years and his approval was in the dumps, then the 2017 election kicked in and his approval massively recovered in light of him actually being on the telly saying things! The problem wasn't Corbyn, the problem was the media learned from that episode and didn't feature him or his plans at all this time, knowing that actually showing the man talking about is plans would give him a boost.
