The justification for firing Patricia is that even when the team was good this year the defense that they spent all the money on was putrid.

It's important to remember that with the injuries on offense, Patricia was brought in as a defensive minded coach.

And the Lions defense is awful.

Has a defensive minded head coach that was brought in to improve the defense ever actually done it?

This stat is a little old now but still worth mentioning:
https://twitter.com/TJLang70/status/1196166321354018818

E: There's probably an interesting discussion to be had around how your offense suddenly getting neutered impacts your defensive performance (less time to rest between defensive series, playing defense from behind etc.) but even so this stat was almost entirely based on games with Stafford under center.

I don't know what the updated stats are for this year, but MN is something like 26-5 in games where the offense scores at least 21 points under Zimmer.

Patricia is the biggest fraud in Pro football coaching.

He was thought of more of a superstar who was evading college sanctions I think than brought in for that particular purpose.

Going back Belichick might count?

Oh god help me. Herm Edwards with the Chiefs. He did improve the defense, although he did it by giving the offense no chance to be successful. I mean, the offense probably wouldn't have been successful anyway, but still.

that's not really true, NE's defenses are almost always in the top 10 in points allowed and they've been absolutely elite for probably seven or eight years of this century

There's s quote about Peyton Manning that applies to the Lions situation as well. "If 18 goes down we're hosed and we don't practice hosed."

My feeling is that Detroit wouldn't be much better with a healthy Stafford, but that's opinion and conjecture. As it is firing a second year coach because he couldn't win with Jeff Driskel Ann's David Blough is a real bad look.

Now that your career coaching record is 9-20-1 we've decided to take these allegations seriously.

Yeah if you need a football justification, it's right there too. The Lions have been demonstrably worse since he became the head coach. I guess it takes 3 years to learn a lesson though
