Last time we spoke (two years ago or so?) he was going off about black people all being on welfare. I pointed out that there are more rural white folks on welfare programs than African Americans - and was able to point to official statistics - and he stopped trying to talk politics for the day and a half until we left.

I'm not looking to change his mind, just shut him up.

Thank you.

Yeah lol if you think you should waste your time appealing to the loud chud in your family. Your goal is to beat the chud into submission. Radicalize the dozen or so people who are sympathetic to your views that have been browbeaten by their lovely relative for years by calling the chud a cuck until he stops talking to you

My chud uncle died today at 56 (and on his daughters birthday). He had flu/pneumonia and had seen his doctor a couple days ago, but decided to avoid the ER when his sickness escalated because of the expense.

He regularly railed against universal healthcare, and got in multiple arguments with me about the ACA years ago for being sOciAlIsm.

As much as I am a little sad because he was a genuinely loving grandfather, you all do not have that burden.

I'm sorry for this, even as ironic and self-imposed as these things can seem it's very often extremely hard to deal with on a personal level because even the worst chud lunatic can be a loving and dedicated friend and family member if they choose to be, and so stuff like the irony of the situation just seems bitter, especially when the systems like the ACA he railed against are the same ones that probably wouldn't have saved him anyway and are ones we're fighting against too, even if we're fighting for the right reasons and they the wrong ones

for all the bluster of creating this thread in the first place I'm a terminal softie

Gonna address this part first:

Then why is it that most of this thread is people going 'Yeah my farm is under water and my neighbors killed themselves over the stress but darned it I'll vote for him again!'? They are a part of his voter base, by a fairly wide margin. Mainly because of age/race/education demographics endemic in those rural areas.

And to the point: yeah, I agree with you on that. Seeing the systematic destruction of Rural America by their own hand should not be celebrated, it should be fought against. But the steps in doing so (education, voting rights, investment in small business over massive corporate farming operations, and on) are things that they actively fight against in the ballot because of the current right-wing stranglehold over the country. So seeing them implode due to their own bad decisions can...well, just look at the thread title.

Do you think most people in the country are the guy who owns a 1500 acre farm, you actual cretin

Do you suppose maybe landlords are a deeply reactionary class nationwide, irrespective of their cowboy-hat-ownership status

Where there's a lack of enthusiasm for the Democrats among the rural poor (and there is) it comes from a keen awareness that the only time the liberal establishment acknowledges they exist at all is to call for their extermination. Nobody interviews the farmhand, they just tell em they're surplus people who should die already cause their boss sucks

People who own big farms aren't the rural poor. Poor people don't do stuff like grumble about how they can't get kids to detassel corn for 10 cents an hour like they earned in 1940, they're the ones working minimum wage to pay off drug court debt imposed on them for a gram of weed to keep them from escaping the landlord tyranny that is small town American Life

Ya it's not a coincidence that every single rural voter that gets media attention is either a local Republican party official or affluent retiree hanging out at a diner at 2pm on a Tuesday. Actual working class people would say stuff like "ever since Berkshire Hathaway bought my trailer park services have been cut and rents increased 50%" and that's intolerable to The Narrative

There was a deep dive into the life and material conditions of Dylan Roof awhile back by the Atlantic I think that is really good for horrifying libs. Just ask them to read it and say "more Americans have to live like that than don't"

Lol it's not sympathetic to him or anything it's just the only modern portrait of being poor as gently caress in rural American I can think of, see where I said it's interesting because it explores the material conditions of all of their lives? The biggest reason not to be sympathetic to rural people is that most of them have no good reason to even live out there. Every plan to help them just boils down to building out infrastructure and tax abatements to attract business. It is just subsiding the landlords, and hoping it trickles down.

That same money would help a lot more people in urban areas.

There are tens of thousands of homeless people in the cities, but we need to give Jeff Bezos another billion dollars so 200 people in Bumblefuck Kentucky can get a warehouse job.
