There were a bunch of sports-car manufacturers building on top of Euro micro-cars during that time: Marcos, etc. There were also "semi-factory" sports versions of small cars. The Lotuses really broke the mold by being designed as sports cars and racers from the beginning.

Lotus as a brand, and given models thereof, can be said to come about at a certain time and date, but the Lotus template comes from the post-war specials based on putting an alloy body on an old Austin 7 chassis and so forth. Incidentally, that's where John Haynes, the repair manuals guy, got his start. He wrote his first book about building one in the fifties.
