I don't know how fire works.

Once an area has been burnt, and I feel like that would happen pretty quick in these conditions, isn't the fire done for that particular burnt section.

Why can't you pre-burn a 5km wide strip of land as a fire break before population centers if you know this is going to happen in 6-12 months. Australia's population is super super concentrated along the coast so you only really need to make a fire break on one side.

It doesn't really help the smoke situation, but 5km seems like it would be enough to prevent your city from the literal fire tornado so people at least don't need to swim into the ocean to not burn to death

For these videos of fire trucks driving through the woods, what are they actually trying to do. Evacuate people? Again I just feel this sort of thing would be pretty easy to track where its headed and you could leave before it all goes down. But I don't know anything about this situation.

You did your best to couch this in all kinds of layers of "I could be wrong" but seriously this is not coming from a place of genuine curiosity you're just being a oval office. No one is this stupid.

I was planning on going up there in late January because it's usually nice and cool compared to Melbourne. Then I was going to drive across the range, come down the NSW side and go over to Canberra via the Kosciusko national park.

I'm not doing that anymore, not this year.

They have snow guns that are awesome at stopping fires. However, I'm worried if they lose power (from the power stations that are in deep gorges down the mountain) the whole resort would go with it. Nothing can be done about it except confirm he's got insurance on it. It's just a holiday flat he rents out during winter, but I'm worried we'll never be able to use out of Winter again. You can't fire-break for a firestorm anyway, it's creating its own wind, throwing embers far ahead of it, and sucking up oxygen which further propels it along. These firestorms are also attacking territory very rarely touched by fire, unheard-of places like the west of Tasmania and the Snowy Mountains, places you associate with snow rather than fire.

To add to this, it's been so hot and dry that subtropical rain forests in Queensland and Northern NSW that have never burned before have gone up in flames.

So apparently this is the largest peacetime evacuation to take place in Australia. Anyone remaining tonight is being urged to leave now. Tomorrow is predicted to be horrific, worse than NYE.

Ten people are confirmed dead, 8 in NSW and 2 in Victoria with 28 people unaccounted for in East Gippsland.

The Eyre highway across the Nullarbor linking Western Australia to South Australia is still closed and it's very possible that they will face shortages and could run out of supplies there.

more specifically the idea that fire service personal have the freedom to override council ‘green tape’ (quick break to have a shower after typing out that phrase) when human safety is concerned and this ability is more or less concrete within each state bc it makes perfect sense for it to be tbh despite how sad it makes me. If it’s bullshit that’s fine I guess I just wanna be informed bc I’m in a wild life protection area and that owns but I also don’t want to die and I’d like to help the greens actually get a councillor elected in my ward and also id like to at least know what the QLD version of this failsafe is if it exists

I'm not sure what you're asking for exactly but I heard straight from RFS in QLD and a very experienced bloke in Vic Forestry's that more-or-less what the guy from twitter said is true. The evil mythical green tape that prevents hazard reduction doesn't exist in the form that is memetically perpetuated by the Australian community. The vast vast vast majority of the paperwork associated with hazard reduction burning is related to safety of surrounding property, personnel and making sure as many measure as possible are put in place to prevent the burn from going out of control (which is getting increasingly difficult now days thanks to climate change). The same restrictions on these burns have been in place for a long time they have not changed, simply the window for safe burns has been drastically reduced.

For your area, for example, being a wild life protection area the question asked will be "Does conducting a hazard reduction burn reduce the risk of people or homes being endangered from Moderate or higher downwards?" If the answer is yes they will look at implementing a burn during a safe period. Part of the process for this may involve sweeping the area to safely remove said protected animals and relocate them to a safer area during the burn, but their presence will not necessarily prevent the burn from going ahead if it's needed so badly.

I would suggest asking exceptionally heroic Goon and CFA member Tomberforce in the AusPol thread or maybe here if he is lurking. It maybe more concrete from him rather than my 2nd hand info as the only thing I have to back up my claim is "I was told by fireies I was working with during a fire."

It's laws and regulations so its complicated, but you can start here:
Qld Government vegetation clearing requirements
https://www.qld.gov.au/environment/land/management/vegetation/clearing

Clearing exemptions
https://www.qld.gov.au/environment/land/management/vegetation/exemptions

Under the exemptions you can see fire management is exempt from requiring a permit - eg
Fire management line
Clearing for a necessary fire management line to a maximum width of 10m.

Firebreaks
Clearing to establish or maintain a necessary firebreak to protect buildings and structures (other than fences, roads and tracks) to a maximum width of 20m or 1.5 times the height of the tallest adjacent tree, whichever is the greater.

Hazardous fuel load reduction
Clearing by fire to reduce hazardous fuel load under the Fire and Emergency Services Act 1990.

These are the general regulations, there's probably some more that are specific to the emergency services.
