I use cast iron on my glasstop 3-5 times a week and haven't scratched it yet.

Thomamelas posted:Working in security, I would get calls a few times a year from people who were obsessed with the idea booby trapping their homes and yards. And they'd want to know what manufacturers offered products for this. It was always a bit of a problem because people doing poo poo like that pose a danger to fire departments, EMS, along with delivery people and mail people. Generally I'd try to talk them out of it but I would always pass on their info to fire departments and law enforcement. I really didn't like the idea of mixing law enforcement and people with mental illness but it was the best solution I could find. I've also done security work and I actually got into a real argument with a crazy libertarian small business owner who insisted he had good enough lawyers to get away with keeping loaded shotgun traps. He only relented when the third lawyer we asked told him he would be completely hosed, and he only believed that lawyer because he was a fellow Mormon. I have a lot of stories about that guy, he's genuinely dangerous and makes me actually wish we had red flag laws where we live.

People can get really loving stubborn about what they think is legal. And they can believe some dumb poo poo is legal. My rule of thumb is always People > Property. There are things like fog generators as anti-theft deterrents that are legal and code compliant but I wouldn't touch those with a ten foot pole.

A few minutes later I put some water on to boil, planning to make mashed potatoes. I then realized we didn't have any potatoes so I dumped the water out but forgot to turn off the burner. When the cornbread was finished, I took it out of the oven and proceeded to put it directly on the still-on burner which I had forgotten about. It survived about 90 seconds before exploding with the loudest bang I think I've ever heard from inside my house. loving glass everywhere, dogs scared out of their minds. It was horrific. 95% of the time when someone says 'real pyrex' they are saying 'real' to refer to the old-school good stuff that you can only find in laboratory equipment these days. Generally speaking, glass/clay/ceramic cookware is really good for low, slow, and long cooking items, like casseroles, stews, roasts, and lasagnas. Because they also have a shitton of thermal mass, they stay hot out of the oven for quite some time too. If you time it right, you can pull something from the oven, and get it to the potluck in a 'rested but still pleasantly warm to eat' state and show up everyone who brought cold, or at best room temperature stuff.

Kesper North posted:Transformer on the telephone pole. Those are real pretty when they go up. There was a windstorm in Seattle one year where I got to watch them explode in every neighborhood on the far side of Lake Washington... It's possible they shot a transformer, hard to tell from the video. More likely they hit an insulator or the conductor itself and popped it, causing an instant fault (short circuit). So something I find interesting - anytime something happens up a utility pole, people say the "transformer blew up". Not that I expect laypersons to troubleshoot the issue, but more than likely it's actually a "short circuit" of some variety. Like the wind in your story - high wind causes conductors to flop around and slap together or tree limbs to fall into it, making a big light show until the upline protective device operates. Probably the most dramatic example of a short circuit you will find, a utility level fault condition like that. I have literally had to argue with people that their transformer is fine while I'm in the process of restoring their power. But "short circuit" is what people like to call all kinds of electrical failures that aren't shorts, at all. Battery terminal corroded on your car battery? "That terminal is shorted out" - WTF?
