I imagine even if firefighters have decent savings they're probably losing >$1K a month at best just staying alive and paying bills since they're unable to work for an income at the same time. And that's not even including people who have don't have decent savings who volunteer because they need their town to not burn down. I get why the volunteer model makes sense for rural firefighting, since the fire risk is varies a lot throughout the year (for example, the fire danger in July in southern states is probably very low) but they should still be compensated for their labour. You'd have to be irredeemably evil to suggest otherwise.

They get some kind of leave but it’s only like 20 days in a year and a lot of the others have used their holidays to cover the gap. That doesn’t help if your self employed though. I’m seriously considering joining up once poo poo dies down cause as a teacher I have 12 weeks of the year where I’m not technically working but still doing school stuff so I can help out more than sitting on my arse doing nothing

Sometimes I get paid leave for SES work as I work for my state government in my normal job. But that is only when a state of emergency is declared.

And only an Australian understands the difference. Or to quote the best bush poets ever to live: I maybe a oval office, but at least I'm not a loving oval office. Resting Lich Face posted:I can't loving believe your firefighters aren't getting paid for that poo poo (as far as I've read, I could be wrong). I grew up in California, another place that is routinely on fire, and my father and brother are volunteer firefighters for the local municipality but when they get sent out on strike teams to go fight the big wildfires elsewhere in the state they get paid a pretty good wage and that's in the capitalist dystopia that is the US. It's ridiculous; the guys out there risking their lives (and wildland fires are where firefighters die, not structure fires like in the movies) deserve better. If you think that's unbelievable, just before New Years, when asked to provide funding and support, the loving PRIME MINISTER OF THE COUNTRY said no, because "they want to be there". https://www.theguardian.com/austral...ant-to-be-there e: f;b.

As far as I know, our work has a special type of leave called Disaster Leave. You claim it if you're affected by or volunteering for the fire. I hope more than a few workplaces do this. I got it when I left home early on New Year's Eve because of, uh...

Thanks I'll give that a look. As much as rebuilding people's homes is important it's also crucial to support the wildlife that's left as well.

Found out that the guys who died on Kangaroo Island were friends/work colleagues of my dad's. Apparently a man and his son. The man died in his car and it seems the son left the car and tried to run on foot but didn't make it.

Yeah, I deleted the post because I realised it wasn’t t actually that helpful. I initially thought it was a useful size comparison but the actual scale of fires on it is way overblown so it outweighs any useful comparisons. Do me a favour and edit your post too please? Better evacuation readiness and communication this time and enough people still have the last "big one" on their minds. The statement should be "surprisingly few human deaths... So far" since shits still burning and will do for a while yet.

I was in the car with my Dad at Christmas and he tried to recite the "Greenies are to blame" stuff and I just went "No they're not" and quickly ran over the points why that's just dumb and he dropped the subject imediately. Today I had a long talk with him on the phone about the fires and he didn't bring up the Greens once. He did try going "Well what do these people expect ScoMo to do???" so I had to explain all his fuckups.
