This trilogy had the same problem Lost did. JJ Abrams wrote the beginning and the end but let other writers take over for the middle and the ending didn't fit anymore, but it was still awkwardly tacked on.

If you're going to bring back a guy who was thrown down a space well into an energy vortex in a space station that was atomized minutes later, fine. We've got dark powers, teleportation of a sort, super weapons, ghosts, clones. You can do that in the story, if you put in the barest effort to lay the groundwork in the first two pictures of the trilogy. Tip your hand ever so slightly and give the audience some payoffs to actual setups instead of mystery box bullshit. The harder part is the thematic one, because you are resurrecting a character who's death marked the powerful ending of a two-trilogy story of a characters corruption and redemption. And you can still do that, but you you have to set up something just as juicy THEMATICALLY that helps the audience feel like it's not a middle finger to the story that came before and is a natural and dramatic conclusion to the new story. Harder, I can't really script doctor how this would work out of the mess that's the ST-- but I think it would have been possible. Instead literally nothing about the surprise third act sheevery makes sense narratively or thematically and the film and filmmakers and characters themselves know it and just give an embarrassed shrug and a reheated throwaway line from a marginally better movie in the series.

So let's say hypothetically you get to go back and have a do-over. These three movies are remade with the same principle cast, but instead of being handed off between two directors having a slapfight the entire trilogy is either entirely written/directed by one of JJ or Rian. Who would you rather want to make the whole trilogy according to their vision?
|
# ? Jan 9, 2020 03:50 |

Rian of course, considering he’s made other good movies and tv episodes

Not a doubt in my mind Rian. There's stuff I dislike about TLJ but I still think it's the one with the most to say that isn't just jerking off your fandom boner. I'd love to see his ground-up treatment of a whole trilogy if he got a muligan.

Rian Johnson is creative and curious in ways that I don't think JJ Abrams is capable of.
