If the computer can reduce already polynomial time problems to a lower time complexity order then it's something else entirely, not a QC. Quantum computers definitionally reduce an area of super-polynomial problem space to polynomial time, though we haven't yet established the full bounds of that expanded space.

I appreciate your knowledge of actual quantum computing but in 2-300 years things might be a bit different

I get that what you have works for you, but it's not like having DVDs or BDs is only feasible for the house-privileged who can accommodate bookcases and shelves full of big clunky cases and boxes. They make these arcane artifacts that are essentially a three ring binder you can pack hundreds of discs into. And if you're willing to say "gently caress the police" you could rip discs onto a hard drive and then toss the discs; you can pack a metric shitload of media onto a 4TB external hard drive that is entirely USB powered and takes up roughly the same volume as a pack of smokes.

That's still pretty dang impressive considering he's (probably) packing all of that (and the thinky bits too) in his head.

So... why? Why build a robot of human proportions and put all the thinky computer-y bits in the head? Wouldn't it make sense to distribute them for redundancy and safety? Or like for latency keep his locomotion processors near his core? Does Data keep a complete backup in his rear end?

I vividly remember seeing an ad to pre-order the first season of TNG on DVD, and the concept of owning an entire season of television in one go was mind boggling.

It would make sense to do that. However, there are several episodes of TNG where Data's head comes off and is still fully functional (heh) so, even if there are backups/redundancies, all the thinky bits in the head are obviously enough to run Data's complete personality.

Yeah, I was too young really to collect any TV shows on VHS, but I remember they tried for awhile in the early 2000s to apply the same pricing models to DVD seasons and releasing things a few episodes at a time and that died really fast.

I can't remember what show it was for, but I remember ads for that kind of thing from the early 2000s that seemed to be specifically targeted at elderly people - some really old show and obscenely priced DVDs that only had one or two episodes on them, delivered monthly of course. Even back then that seemed really lovely and predatory to me.

We haven't had that spirit here since 1969.

The VHS tapes that had two episodes each were annoying because it seemed they ALWAYS paired a good episode with a crappy one you don't care about, and then they ALWAYS put the good one second so that you had to hunt around with fast forward to find the beginning of it.

There are so many worldbuilding questions this opens up. If these holonovels are still selling by DS9, this is vintage 250 year old smut, or even an entire genre has grown out of one little initial story. How much has Ferengi smut changed over time, and has porn pushed them in their exploration of the galaxy?

Did the growth of the sex slave smut genre influence the oppression of women in Ferengi society? A whole lot can happen in 250 years.

I wouldn’t be surprised if in the background there was some desire to avoid any kind of :spock: comparisons but also I can see that since emotions would run a bit higher than TNG there wouldn’t really a good place for a recurring Vulcan-typical stoic presence.

It's vanishingly rare but pop-culture things do sometimes persist for centuries in the real world. Robinson Crusoe was published just over 300 years ago, and his name, the entire "castaway story" genre, and even some specific story elements (e.g. his man Friday) are still present in the popular consciousness to this day.

Don Quioxte, the Canterberry Tales, Shakespeare's works, Huck Finn, the Scarlett Letter, there is all sorts of stuff that has lasted hundreds of years off hand. Probably helps there were ways to store the stories.
