Why does Ukraine always somehow show up?

If it was actually an accident it's one of the most horribly timed accidents in a long long time. The last fatal crash of a 737 (non-Max) was in 2018. The last non-fatal was sometime in 2019 but there are thousands of those planes in operation. For one of them to crash accidentally in that place while all this poo poo is going on is an extremely low probability. And to top it off, of course, is the Ukraine connection.

That seems quite likely given the no doubt extremely anxious air defense operators, but I guess we should wait for more information on the technical issue that caused it to burst into flames and spiral straight into the ground before we draw any conclusions.

I sure hope it was an Iranian SAM missile that brought it down and not a air to air missile shot by a US warplane...
|
# ? Jan 8, 2020 05:22 |

That video certainly looks like a bomb going off on the plane or it getting hit by ordinance. The sudden cutoff of the ADS data supports that theory too. If it had been a fire or some sort of pilot error the plane would have transmitted all the way into the ground. An airliner hasn't spontaneously exploded in decades so foul play of some sort is almost certainly the cause here. Rest in peace to all those aboard. I don't think it was shot down. Through the past 5 hours or so I was watching flightradar and there were hundreds of planes flying over Iran and Iraq without a care in the world. Doubtful they'd shoot down a plane that just took off at 8,000 feet.
|
# ? Jan 8, 2020 05:34 |
|
There's no way they could've watched that plane appear on their radar from their own major airport and mistaken it for a hostile plane just loving appearing over Tehran from out of the blue.

Doubtful they'd shoot down a plane that just took off at 8,000 feet. It was a sudden catastrophic failure at 8000 feet. Not many things can cause that in modern aircraft. Even an engine fire would have burned for minutes and melted the pylon off before making the fuel tank explode. Obviously it's possible to have been some design fault with the aircraft but this is a model that has been flying for decades without anything like this happening. For it to suddenly emerge on an airframe that is 3 years old in the middle of a country hours after they launched some missiles at the USA seems astronomically unlikely to me.
