As promised below is an image showing the current backburn they're doing to contain the fire heading towards the mountains from the south. All of those big orange splotches is previous hazard reductions. As you can see these current fires don't really give a gently caress about bits that have been previously burnt as they've made their way into and through them. Click for huge

There are some good links in the op for anyone thinking of making animal pouches. I would advise getting in touch with your local drop off point before you do to see what is needed in your area. My mum’s been making some but up here in qld the needs are different to what is needed down south E: didn’t actually see the links in the op, I must have found them elsewhere ARCG Facebook: https://m.facebook.com/groups/arfsncrafts/ Patterns: https://theusefulkitchen.com/arccg-patterns-files/ (also on Facebook but I don’t use fb so I can’t see them) Donation centres: https://rescuedpets.com.au/drop-off-locations/ Visible Stink fucked around with this message at 04:28 on Jan 8, 2020 |

Well now I have just found out a local mixed crew of QLD RFS is heading to Nowra in NSW as relief crew. I know two blokes in it. One is a guy who was also in the SES and I served a deployment with post Townsville floods in 2019. The other is my "Aunty's" (I guess she's more what you can you can call my surrogate grandmother) son. I don't know him that well but I've spent a decent bit of time with him. His brother is a long time family friend and surrogate uncle who is also one of my SES seniors.

The cops found the starting point of one of the fires in South Australia, near the town of Keilira. Dry lightning was determined to be the cause: According to a local newspaper the fire destroyed 24,000 hectares, killing 200 alpacas, 237 cattle, 1,649 sheep and 310 beehives.

How exactly do you get caught for arson. There isn't going to be any gasoline fumes or tire marks or fingerprints left behind traceable to you after you open a portal to hell in the middle of the australian desert.

Mostly you’re a dumb arse who isn’t real subtle about leaving the scene so you get spotted and then questioned. Also in NSW if you get convicted of arson they tend to keep an eye of you on the severe and above fire days and may come knocking if you’re silly enough to light a fire in the same area.

I remember reading an article about how they catch arsonists causing bush and grass fires, I’ll see if I can track it down and post it as I remember it being pretty interesting. Sometimes the starting point of the fire isn't that hot compared to the rest of the burnt area so things are sometimes semi-intact. I don't have a citation for this or anything so take it how you will but one person got caught lighting a fire in the Adelaide hills about 15 years ago because he had some elaborate system where he lit a mosquito coil and it reached kindling when he was well away from the scene but left fingerprints all over the metal base of the mosquito coil.

Well, the smoke was back today, but it wasn't so bad. Friends have been allowed to go back to homes on the south coast, not sure how long they'll be safe for, though. One friend has lost two family members. The rain has eased the fires but nothing is truly extinguished, violent storms last night would have easily started off new fires that could build into monsters later. We're heading into was it usually the peak time for bushfires, Feb traditionally being the worst month.

Some good news in these fires, they evacuated a lot of people from Mallacoota on the HMAS Choules last Friday. The military folks set up the ship's vehicle bay so the evacuees would have a space for their dogs to settle in and then a very kind person took a bunch of photos and stuck them on facebook. https://www.facebook.com/groups/mallacoota/permalink/3158730754141945/

So, this is probably a really dumb question, but I’m an American who didn’t grow up in wildfire country. I understand that the vast majority of destruction of human homes/lives/etc. by bushfires is typically rural areas. How flammable is a city? I would think someplace like downtown Sydney wouldn’t be at risk of going up in an inferno because of the lack of fuel, and we don’t build everything out of wood anymore. Would things like gas lines pose a serious risk of an urban firestorm, or would a fire typically spread slowly enough that it could be handled? I assume concrete jungle doesn’t burn the same way that famous historic urban firestorms did.

The number of animals killed by the bushfires has been upgraded to at least 800 million in NSW alone, but that's a very very conservative estimate and the actual number is probably several billion. At least one species, the long-footed Potoroo, is likely to have been completely wiped out and rendered extinct due to these fires. Those numbers don't include insects but there'd definitely be hundreds of billions destroyed. Large areas of old-growth rainforests have burnt which is just unprecedented and scientists just don't have any idea how long they'd take to regenerate, if at all. Australia's biodiversity has taken a massive hit and we're not even halfway through summer yet and historically we've seen a lot of our biggest bushfires in February so we may not have even seen the worst of it yet. https://www.theage.com.au/national/many-many-billions-of-animals-feared-to-have-died-in-bushfires-20200108-p53pvk.html

Asking because My dad’s doing a Canberra to Perth drive soon. tia lube enthusiast The Eyre highway across the Nullabor has been closed since Christmas: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-01-07/nullarbor-still-cut-off-by-bushfires-eyre-highway-closed/11843266 There was a bushfire back in '07 where three truckies died trying to cross the Great Eastern Highway so the road authorities aren't loving around and taking any chances these days, even though this has severely hosed up commerce between the states. The good news is that there's some alternate routes, the bad news is that the only other fully sealed road adds an additional 67 hours to the trip. That's not hyperbole (There's a bunch of unsealed roads that cross WA but driving across the Great Victoria Desert on an unsealed road in these conditions is a really bad idea.) Apparently there's been several tourists who decided to try and sneak around the "road block" via "back streets" that were recommended by google maps which turned out to be bush tracks through the middle of nowhere and the cops had to go and rescue them: https://www.kalminer.com.au/news/kalgoorlie-miner/google-maps-gets-overseas-tourists-stuck-near-goldfields-fire-zone-ng-b881426426z tl;dr: tell your dad to just sit and wait until they announce that the Eyre highway has been reopened, or catch a plane and hire a car in Perth Edit: oh I forgot to add, there's a category 2 cyclone smashing the NW coast of the country so that alternate sealed route up north might be flooded out sometime soon https://twitter.com/WA_Roads/status/1214889077201342465 Snowglobe of Doom fucked around with this message at 18:31 on Jan 8, 2020 |
