The embed cuts off Awquafina and gramma at the bottom, so it's not just a silly looking big head cartoon dude, they're standing in front of some artwork. I really like how they're painted (edit: Actually, looking again on my work computer those are probably just photos? I like the composition anyway. I think I remember shots of people passing by paintings in the movie) Teenage Fansub fucked around with this message at 01:42 on Jan 9, 2020 |

Who is the big-head cartoon guy supposed to be - I'm suspecting the decision-making behind the poster is going to make a lot more sense if we found out that it's, like, a figure particular to Chinese culture.

He's a mythic figure called Shou Xing, who is basically a god of longevity. To a Chinese audience, it'd make sense as the symbolic personification of Long Life keeping the family's secret about Nainai's illness. The Chinese title, as I understand, is literally translated as "Don't Tell Her."

FilthyImp posted:This is an honest question because aside from like MTV's Girl Code I haven't had much exposure to her work or music or anything, but can't she still be a fan of/engage hip-hop while doing things that may be culturally or ethnically significant to her? Yes, absolutely. However she was putting on affectations that were not honest to her life. She was coopting black street culture when that's not how she was raised nor is it reflective of her financial situation. It was cover because Asian women have a very difficult time in Hollywood. Then as she gains fame, it all slides away and she becomes more """"""""""normal"""""""". Kinda like how Iggy Azalea was born upper middle class but wants people to think she was a hood rat. Obviously this is really simplified and I wouldn't begrudge her if she didn't drop the mask as soon as she was successful. It's kinda insulting that she'd wear a culture until she no longer needed it.

Cythereal posted:Vietnam 3 (since Iraq/Afghanistan was 2), most likely, if it gets that far. I keep seeing people say this, and it's wrong and a crazy dangerous thing to believe. A war with Iran would not be comparable to Iraq or Vietnam. It would be orders of magnitude worse. America hasn't fought a war with a country capable of striking US assets outside their border in 70 years. Iran can. They just demonstrated it with their missile attack on a base in Iraq. They demonstrated it a few months ago when a drone attack shut down a Saudi oil field. Look at the military bases the US has around Iran We have surrounded Iran with targets. If a proper war actually kicks off, all of those bases will get hit. 4,000 troops died in the entire war in Iraq. More than that would die in the first week of a war with Iran. Iraq had a weak military and a society fractured by ethnic tensions controlled by an unpopular authoritarian regime. Iran has a strong military, a mostly Shia society, and a very strong national identity, led by a democratically elected government. They aren't going to collapse like Iraq did. They will fight. It's also, as you can see more than three times as big. And like 80% mountains with the rest being divided by dense urban environments and a giant polluted swamp. The three worst kinds of terrain for an invading army. If us Troops march into Iran, they will die. In numbers we haven't seen since Vietnam. If we're lucky. And Iran isn't alone. When Iran struck our base, there were other smaller attacks on US bases in Iraq at the same time, from local militias. If the war is on with Iran, guess what, it's back in Iraq at the same time. And Iran just said that if we attack Iran Hezbollah will go "gently caress it let's do it an be legends" and attack Israel. Full scale regional war. And oh yeah, I mentioned Saudi oil fields, right? If the war's on, those are gone. Iran can take those out whenever they please. If the Saudi oil fields go, that's instant global recession as the price of oil skyrockets. A US/Iran war would be bad on a scale most Americans genuinely can't comprehend. It would not be comparable to Iraq or Vietnam. It would be comparable to Germany trying to invade France by sending troops through Belgium. (USER WAS PUT ON PROBATION FOR THIS POST)
