Surprisingly Heavy Metal might actually explain this.

The most powerful pirate faction captured a derelict ship that's pretty much outright stated to be a Clan Wolverine ship from when they escaped the other Clans, and it was loaded up not only with all sorts of juicy LosTech like Snub PPCs and such, but some ClanTech and stuff that even the Clans don't have. They've been plundering it and flooding the Black Market with its goodies.

Random contracts in career and campaign can both go 1 skull lower or higher. If there's an assault it should be crippled unless it's a gimmick contract at that point

Yeah what you should be paying attention to in addition to the skulls is the max pay. If it seems like higher pay than you'd expect, you might have drawn one of the "identical" contracts that they offer that are disguised to make you think you know what the mission is before they spring a surprise on you.

Like just today, we landed and then Sumire said "hey boss these 'Mechs are bigger than I thought" and then another faction landed a lance and I killed them all and won.

I’m a noob who has read nothing. I started campaign mode and did the prologue and first mission where you get hosed on the cash.

What is the difference between campaign and career mode, can you roll over into career mode after campaign, and should I be negotiating for more c-bills or salvage? And are there weight limits for dropping your lance on missions or just go crazy with heavy as you can?

Campaign is the main story, career is a mostly-procedurally-generated freelance campaign.

You can keep playing freelance after you finish the campaign.

It depends. There's no strong right or wrong answer, especially since the 1.8 patch.

Almost always no weight limits. It'll be really obvious if there are any weight limits, and I don't think there are any during the main campaign.

Campaign is a lot easier, since the priority story missions pay a ton of cash. Once you're done it does roll over into the sandbox mode that career is, but usually by then you'll be able to stomp everything you run into. Career mode starts you out with a timer to rack up a high score, but doesn't actually end at that point. You can keep playing as long as you want.

For cash/salvage, I usually just go max salvage early on so I can get better weapons/mechs. There are a couple contracts where I know there won't be good salvage because of all the vehicles instead of mechs so those I do max cash.

Can confirm no weight limits during campaign. I modded to open up travel when the Argo was available, and by the time I got back to the campaign proper I was dropping Steiner Scout Lances while the campaign was still throwing lights around. A couple timed missions came close to the wire while Kamea bitched in my ear, but I had no problems.

I've gone about this both ways in a couple careers each. Especially since HM, going full cash early - up to 2.5 skull missions - allowed me to buy quality mechs from stores/black market and equip them with nice stuff much earlier in the game than I would have gotten with full salvage.

I generally do the opposite of this, early on it's easier to buy a new light mech than to salvage them. I start salvaging when I can reliably fight mediums. Also vehicles can be a good way to get +variants of weapons because they carry a ton of them.

Yeah, the new availability of lostech plus the heavy metal weapons really changes the equation on cash vs salvage when you're first getting geared up since you can't salvage any of it. Swapping in LBXes or Ultras for vanilla autocannons is a pretty solid upgrade over a lot of stock builds even if you change nothing else, and other goodies like snub nose PPCs, COILs, and double heat sinks are easily within your finances if you go straight cash. LBXes and snubs in particular are absolute godsends in an early campaign because your gunners suck and you only need to get a little piece of that dipshit Locust to ruin his day, so now you get in a couple clusters and take off an arm where other weapons miss entirely...not to mention all the random head hits, those are nice too when AI pilots are out there with only 3 hp.

I think it's a lot more fun with all the DLC, especially the most recent. The base game has a perfectly fine campaign and sandbox mode though.

If you're on Steam it looks like the all-encompassing season pass is the best overall deal. I'd say get the season pass, you should be able to get a good feel for how much you enjoy the game before you pass the refund limit time. The base game is fun and the campaign gives you guidance without being on-rails, but the expansions add a lot of cool features.

I've been playing BEXCE career and getting some fun curveballs. I finished a mission for the pirates and got the agreed payment, but on the salvage screen there were 0 mech parts and I couldn't pick any of the equipment that showed. Salvage value showed as 8,888,888%. I'm assuming this is a bug, but I also like the idea of some shady pirates refusing to abide by the terms of the deal or cancelling my salvage rights because only 3/4 of their units survived.

Twice in a row I've had 8v8 Tag Teams turn into 8v12. The first time was easy because the initial lances were scattered and the third mostly sat on the edge of the map idle until I went out of my way to take them out. The second time was much tougher, and one of the longest missions I've played. The initial lances were close together and made a solid firing line on a ridge, and the third came in shortly after the mission started. Davion's lance did very little to soak fire until halfway through the battle, but once they engaged we were getting knockdowns every turn. Very challenging but fun mission that netted me a full Grasshopper and a Gauss Rifle.

Is there a visual indicator for Flashpoints on the system map? I kind of zipped through that part of the tutorial and I can't figure out how to find them.

Yes I would say play the base game campaign mode, then if you decide you would like to play more get the season pass and start a career. If you bounce right off the campaign then I'm not sure the DLC will change your mind.

I finished the campaign and started a career. A bunch popped up but I didn't do any and they stopped popping up. Because I had not paid attention when it was explained, I had no idea of how to find the ones that had popped up. Here's hoping it's not too late to find some, I really don't want to restart the game of watching 3/3 salvage turn into 2/3 because the enemy pilot ejected on what would have been a killing injury.

Grimey Drawer
Tried playing again after a long hiatus, and my restarted campaign immediately ends when a tiny spider jumps in behind one of the NPCs that absolutely must survive and hits him in the CT, coring him.

Me a couple turns before that: "Oh, OK. That's the second time an enemy managed a rear attack. But it's a Centurion, I think that guy can take the damage."

Second go around, I start remember how to actually play the game.
