I’ve been playing doom and doom 2 lately and now I’ve got a hankering to doing a playthrough of doom 1 with those harsh, crusty-rear end PC speaker sound effects like I did with the old dos shareware. Is there some good way of emulating PC speaker sound in doom these days on a modern computer?

You're very much not wrong. And I say that as someone who, for some reason, has FEAR 2 as one of their favourite games. I would have loved it if they took more cues from Nocturne.

I'm glad I don't have a PS4, because it meant I had to watch an LP of it instead of playing it myself and I realised I dodged a bullet. How was that game so boring? I wasn't even able to finish watching the LP.

If you load the setup program for Chocolate Doom one of the audio options is to play PC speaker effects instead.

The game is like 3-4 hours and I played 1 hour of it a year or so ago (got the game new for like 7€), I may some day just launch it and beat it because reasons but the game itself is bad. The world, the art and so is great but there's little gameplay and is bad and ignores the whole amazing werewolf poo poo for boring cover shooting.

I just finished Doom 2016 about an hour ago (after playing the first half several times) and I was happy with the pacing and amount of story for the most part. Getting forced to watch a cutscene for one minute at the end of a chapter is not a big deal. I'd get bored of an uninterrupted stream of battle without the opportunity to feel that anticipation for the next bit of fighting and the catharsis and moment of respite at the end of a long map. I assume it'll be similar in Doom Eternal. I can play Arcade Mode if I'm in the mood to just inject that poo poo directly into my veins and honestly it'll probably be the primary way I play going forward now that I've done the campaign, kind of like Diablo 3's adventure mode, but I doubt I'll sit and play it for hours at a time like I did while playing the campaign.

The hosed up thing about getting locked in that room with Hayden is that they let you shoot him, but he doesn't react. Don't build me up as as this unstoppable force of destruction, and then I can't even put a dent in talky tinman over here? gently caress that. He should've been a hologram or something.

When you walk into his room your guns are disabled, but there's a brief window where you can shoot at him. If you do, your shots are absorbed by an energy shield and he says "Save your ammunition".

They could've played that scene in so many different ways. Like Hayden's body is built around an argent reactor and destroying him blows up Mars, or his body instantly rebuilds itself and at the end of the conversation he comments like "if you have the energy to destroy me 40 times in two minutes then Olivia Pierce should be running scared."

I appreciate that there was more to Doom than just shooting because I need more of a hook. In 6 months I've gotten through one episode of Dusk and it's a great game but if I reached a point every session where I'm thinking "hmm, this level is running a little long do I really want to commit to another?". With an upgrade system, checklist of secrets, and arcade challenges there's something to look forward to in every level.

I just don't have a binge-ing personality. Somehow people watch 12 one hour episodes of a new Netflix show the day it comes out and I'm over here planning the exact afternoon I'll attempt to watch the first episode.

It's more that cutscenes are a super lazy form of storytelling and video games in general should move away from them.

I don't know if it has much to do with binging you can stop playing Dusk after a couple levels just like you can Doom after a level or what have you.

Except the cutscenes in Doom 2016 do an amazing job of story telling. Every time Doomslayer interacts with Hayden or anything else and the player isn't in control, it's 100% pure personality.

Between this and the oft-stated opinion that Disco Elysium proves that games should be moving away from action and combat, I think people are just slowly realizing they want to read books instead of playing a video game.

The reward for Dusk is more Dusk which is ostensibly great, Dusk is a good game, and I would've blown through it if I was 12 but instead of looking forward to the next level I'm just thinking about the next activity I want to engage with.

Dusk doesn't need to be more than it is but I bring it up in this argument because if Doom 4 was anything less I wouldn't have played it past the first few maps.

Video games should use whatever tools they need to get their point across. Disco Elysium isn’t an argument against action, it’s an argument that you don’t need action to create drama. I can’t count how often I’ve read “planescape torment is the best written video game it’s a shame the combat sucks” so some people made Planescape minus combat and it rightfully blew up.

Given that you're referring to Doom 2016 here, a game with a grand total of about four minutes of cutscene time, I don't see any less intrusive alternative short of just not having any narrative whatsoever. You can only passively tell a story if the story doesn't directly involve what the player is doing right now, and while I am fond of games like that (e.g. Dark Souls, Outer Wilds, the backstory parts of Prey), Doom is just not that story.
