Having watched this again, the Skimbleshanks sequence seems like it comes from a different director or something. Horrifying and unintentionally funny moments aside, a huge amount of Cats is just dull, with Hooper's clumsy direction stifling the whole damned thing. Oh wow another close up, oh wow another weirdly framed shot hiding something that should be the focus, oh another close up, oh hey a weird mid-action edit, this poo poo is so bo- SKIM BLE SHANKS THE RAIL WAY CAT Hits you like a motherfuckin' slap to the face. The entire sequence is so vibrant and energetic compared to the rest of the movie, and has actual choreography and almost decent cinematography and it's so refreshing it's honestly the only thing that got me through Catswatch 2.0. Like, weird scale issues aside, the part where he's leading them in a dance across the railway lines has an actual joy to it, whereas the rest of the film seems so perfunctory, y'know? It's like Baz Luhrmann got into the editing suite for five minutes or something. Anyway. Yeah.
