i've heard the claims that it's an acronym for "stupid quick unfortunately imminently dead" and the like, but as in literally every case where a word (gently caress, posh, etc) is claimed to be an acronym, that's undoubtedly horseshit

i've also heard that it stands for "squirrelly kid" and that is a little more plausible but also stupid imo

i've also heard that it describes the way they move, drifting slowly in one direction and then rapidly shooting off in another

i've also heard that it's a description of how the person's torso looks when they get ripped in half and all their guts spill out

i personally believe that all of those are bullshit and it's just a word people started using for no particular reason. i guess the one about motion is the most plausible if i had to pick.

More EPA than OSHA but:

Not great, not terrible, until you think about the fact that back then "dump it in the ground" was literally the way to dispose of whatever you had back then, not just used motor oil. So you have the ground thoughtfully absorbing benzene up in Love Canal, PCBs in the mud at the bottom of the Hudson River, Perc and TCE in Woburn, MA, god-knows-what in Tom's River, NJ (and also actually a lot of other sites in NJ) and Cleveland* and countless other places.

Oh, and radioactive sludge in Hanford, WA. Who knew that that could cause a problem? Just dump it in a hole in the ground, it'll be fine.

*Cuyahoga National Park is lovely and right outside Cleveland and also the only National Park to contain a Superfund site!

I love that "dump it in the ground and let future people worry about it" mentality

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dounreay#Nuclear_Decommissioning_Authority_ownership

quote:

A new company called Dounreay Site Restoration (DSRL) was formed as a subsidiary of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) to handle the decommissioning process. By May 2008, decommissioning cost estimates had been revised. Removal of all waste from the site was expected to take until the late 2070s to complete and the end-point of the project was scheduled for 2300.

Apart from decommissioning the reactors, reprocessing plant, and associated facilities, there are five main environmental issues to be dealt with:

A 65-metre (213 ft) deep shaft used for intermediate level nuclear waste disposal is contaminating some groundwater, and is threatened by coastal erosion in about 300 years time. The shaft was never designed as a waste depository, but was used as such on a very ad-hoc and poorly monitored basis, without reliable waste disposal records being kept. In origin it is a relic of a process by which a waste-discharge pipe was constructed. The pipe was designed to discharge waste into the sea. Historic use of the shaft as a waste depository has resulted in one hydrogen gas explosion caused by sodium and potassium wastes reacting with water. At one time it was normal for workers to fire rifles into the shaft to sink polythene bags floating on water.
Irradiated nuclear fuel particles on the seabed near the plant, estimated to be about several hundreds of thousands in number. The beach has been closed since 1983 due to this danger, caused by old fuel rod fragments being pumped into the sea. In 2008, a clean-up project using Geiger counter-fitted robot submarines will search out and retrieve each particle individually, a process that will take years. The particles still wash ashore, including as at 2009, 137 fewer radioactive particles on the publicly accessible but privately owned close-by Sandside Bay beach and one at a popular tourist beach at Dunnet. In 2012 a two million becquerel particle was found at Sandside beach, twice as radioactive as any particle previously found.
18,000 cubic metres (640,000 cu ft) of radiologically contaminated land, and 28,000 cubic metres (990,000 cu ft) of chemically contaminated land.
1,350 cubic metres (48,000 cu ft) of high and medium active liquors and 2,550 cubic metres (90,000 cu ft) of unconditioned intermediate level nuclear waste in store.
1500 tonnes (1500 long tons) of sodium, of which 900 tonnes (900 long tons) are radioactively contaminated from the Prototype Fast Reactor.

Historically much of Dounreay's nuclear waste management was poor. On 18 September 2006, Norman Harrison, acting chief operating officer, predicted that more problems will be encountered from old practices at the site as the decommissioning effort continues. Some parts of the plant are being entered for the first time in 50 years.

After leaving the UK the Scots will spend the next 300 years cleaning up this radioactive disaster. Good thing we've learned from our ancestors and won't be doing anything like this again.

Five people, including one child, were killed in the Russian city of Perm on Monday when a hot water pipe exploded in the night and flooded a basement hotel room with boiling water.

At least three other people were taken to hospital with burns after the incident in the Mini Hotel Caramel, which is located in the basement of a residential building, the region's investigative committee said.

A doctor treating the victims, Andrei Babikov, said a 33-year-old woman had burns covering 35% of her body. Two men aged 28 and 35 were in a less serious condition.

https://twitter.com/Kapil_Patils/status/1219128057853882368

The pipe was part of the district heating system. As a result 20 buildings including the local hospital and school were left without heating or warm water.

The RIA news agency reported that the heating pipe that exploded had been in operation since 1962 and had broken repeatedly in the past, citing a source in the Perm emergency services.

"There were no victims in previous explosions," the source said. "It was not replaced, only repaired."

I think the saw guard is sticking, so the blade is out and still spinning as he falls. It's like the trifecta of really dumb poo poo here:

* Hanging on to the work piece instead of moving the ladder back to maximize instability.
* Saw guard sticking as he falls off the ladder to increase risk of inserting saw into body.

A favorite trick of mine to get dumbasses to not gently caress with balers at later jobs is I'd score one of the bale wires before training new hires on operating it so I'd get a guaranteed wire snap. Seeing one go off like Satan's bullwhip and saying "Now imagine that hitting your face" put the fear in all of them.
