What the gently caress, a 48gb update? Remember when COD came on a CD? CDs held something like 0.5gb.

Really goes to show what sort of infrastructure ISPs have when they aren't regulated to upgrade and just keep their own fiefdoms and charge what they want, pocketing all of it.

shame on an IGA posted:anyway here's some aggressively wholesome content I will never knock attempts at making games more accessible for those with mobility issues. However, once that dude has figured out the ideal button mapping, he can shrink the size of that thing to a quarter of the size by using one of THESE. I built a fight stick that works on PC, PS4, Xbox, and Switch using a similar board and they are the size of an Altoids can.

Further discussion in that mailing list thread is that developers have largely decided collating the changes into incremental patches is too hard so gently caress it you're just gonna get to download the whole game again every time Also god help me I remember downloading the WoW open beta on dial-up

There exists a point where even with good ISP infrastructure and good backhaul from them to their provider you end up with a bottleneck getting the content from the distribution network to the end user, because there's terabits per second at play and that's an actually absurd amount of data. Maybe there's not enough transit between the CDN and its peers in some IX somewhere. Maybe there's not enough routing capacity. Maybe there's not enough compute to transmit that data over and over. Turns out that point was a god-damned Call of Duty update. A few months ago we had a similar "what the gently caress is going on with Akamai" moment on that mailing list. It turned out to be preloading for the new Halo Reach rerelease.

The controller may be big on purpose (I say may because I don't know exactly what kinds of impairments the kid has). Big controllers with big buttons can be good for people with impaired fine motor skills: easy to get your hand on a button but hard to get a particular finger on a smaller button.

Major point of the size of the Mivrosoft Accessibility Controller is that it has a million connections for every possible accessibility add-on (pedals, sticks, breathe tubes, etc) and enough to rebind each button to one of those add-ons. It's modular on purpose!

I'm going to be very upset if Trump doesn't end up with some seriously deep suffering before he gets to depart. Like a dehibalitiatng stroke would be a good start, but preferably him and everyone near him is bankrupted and forced to live in some combination of prison and impoverishment before painfully dying off.

Loden Taylor posted:It IS big on purpose. Hekk was saying he could keep the large controller but dramatically shrink the hardware side by using that board. Yeah sorry I wasn’t clearer. I meant that the physical size of the controller can stay the same shape and size. However all of the wires he has running underneath of it can be made much smaller and easier to fit into the same case he is using for the sticks and buttons. The board I linked replicates the input for any of the normal console controllers. He simply has to hook the appropriate wires up on the board. However once assembled it’d be more of a pain in the rear end to change configurations so it’s best to hash that out beforehand with what he is using.
