my bony fealty posted:thread, what was the band that made you fall in love with harsh vocals? Kind of a gradual process I guess. I'm not going to count kinda-shouty thrash vocals, not even Slayer despite Tom Araya screaming a little here and there, which made up the majority of my listening for the first year of being a metalhead. I know there was some growly death metal around in '88 - '89 but I didn't come across any until later. I'll give the nod to Bathory, specifically Blood Fire Death which I randomly borrowed from a friend in the summer of '89 because I thought the cover illustration looked cool. Quorthon's vocals on that had a level of unhinged rawness that was unlike anything else I'd heard so far. After that I was pretty much ready for anything as far as vocals went.

I put on Reroute to Remain for a direct nostalgia injection and it’s a very fun album. I’m realizing now that it’s like an inch away from nu metal but in a way that doesn’t bug me as much as 99% of djent bands. It’s still funny to me that anyone was surprised about their eventual direction. I don’t think about it much but In Flames really was a huge influence on my listening and guitar learning in the 00s. It’s not even a shameful thing, the old albums are great.

I forever have the hot take that Reroute is like 80% as good as the albums that came before it and there are times I'm in the mood to jam that over their other good material.

I think there's a lot of untapped potential for synths in metal, but that ain't what I was hoping for. Save us, Mick Gordon.

I've heard some decent synthy examples in metal and it can be hit or miss. Depends on what you're lookin for too I guess. You could throwback to some HORSE the Band haha.. Pinkish Black has been a pretty cool dark ambient synth vibe that I saw perform with Sleep last year. Really good fuzzy background music for working to.

I have some one-man bands for you today. https://dangerousmutation.bandcamp.com/album/prophecies-of-annihilation-demo - Dangerous Mutation is a one man death/thrash band from Spain. Sounds pretty good. https://caveblind.bandcamp.com/album/the-golden-axe - Cave Blind is a pretty goofy looking Czech guy (look at that picture on bandcamp!) but he manages to play some pretty decent Bathory inspired music. https://necroroots.bandcamp.com/releases - Necroroots is a 2-man Greek black metal band. They're apparently too cool to put their debut album on bandcamp, but the demo sounds really cool. They've decided to release their album on youtube instead, so here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3Vumc7YqiQ

Tape Kvlt has a Discord? They had a forum for a minute but it was super inactive and I think it's been shut down. Genuinely curious though because I'm old now I guess: what advantages does a Discord offer that a forum or reddit don't?
|
# ? Jan 28, 2020 20:45 |

The forums were a fun little short lived adventure. Discord is just faster and an active chat room more or less, but it has side channels for the major subgenres and off topic channels for sports, games, etc that move a lot slower and are friendlier for once a day visits.
