Whatever you do, don't keep taking missions for the Planetary Government faction and blow up your rep with the great houses; I did that on my first campaign and it took me forever to dig out of that hole.

The corollary to this is that you should never feel bad about dunking on the Planetary Government, because that faction never moves up or down. It's basically just free rep for whoever is hiring you to blow them up.

Which heavy was it? If it's a Dragon or Quickdraw sell it asap.

Otherwise start cruising to other worlds while upgrading your ship. If you don't like the missions a planet has available then keep moving on, you're under no obligation to do every contract a planet has to offer.

It was a marauder.

Speaking of reputation, I am in the red factionwise with the pirates. I found out that it may be a bad idea to be in the red with them since they have the black market. How do I make them like me if I can’t take any missions with them?

It's hard. There are a few low-difficulty independent planets on the far south of the map, one of which has a tag labeled "Pirate Presence". Bounce around those systems for a while farming what contracts they will actually let you take for max rep.

Just don't let it get to hated like I did before doing that, otherwise even most of those contracts won't let you take them.

This, just keep going to neutral planets/one of the powers you don't care about fighting a lot and get boatloads of rep with them.

I tanked my rep with them so badly in the campaign that I literally couldn't even FIND worlds with a low enough difficulty to take contracts with them.

I ended up editing a text file so they would give me missions up to 4 skulls even though they hated my guts and the payout sucked. I headcannoned this by them being desperate for my services.

So I'm encountering a bug where I'm loading a mission, and it's on the dropship screen, it suddenly dumps me to the desktop, with the game minimized, and the sound still playing. Any idea what to do?

So first of all, you've got one of the best mechs in the game as your first heavy. Congrats. When you get a pilot up to tactics 9, you will have %35 chance to hit head on a called shot. This makes removing heads very easy, which also makes salvaging more mechs (for use or for money ) very easy. You'll be using this one for the rest of the game.

As for pirate rep, if you have the Flashpoint DLC, there are two flashpoints that can boost your rep with the pirates. One spawns on Cluff's Stand, an unaffiliated planet near the CC/FWL border. Make sure you DON'T take the Davion spy's offer, when given a choice. There's another one called Criminal Minds that spawns on a CC world I can't remember the name of (its near the FS/CC border) that can boost your pirate rep. Make sure you choose to steal the mech (this will also give a solid medium with DHS you can either use on that mech or strip to put on another). If you have the Urban Warfare DLC, there's a flashpoint that spawns on Mendhem (FS world on the FS/CC border) that can boost your pirate rep. Make sure you take the Daughter's offer, not the Mother's offer.

As a bonus they're also good mechs. Even a GRF-2N can still find good use in an end game lance because it has so much free tonnage and good hardpoints.

Yeah, all my DHS have come from buying Star League mechs (or pieces of them) from the Black Market.

Buying pieces is far more economical; 3 pieces of an Atlas D-HT is like 1.2m per piece, but the whole thing assembled costs 23.5m :smithicide:

Speaking of, what are the Star League chassis? I've probably missed some potential Star League mechs because I forgot about everything lighter than a Highlander lol. Is there a good list somewhere to keep for quick-reference?

GRF-2N (SLDF Griffin)
BL-6B-KNT (SLDF Black Knight)
HGN-732B (SLDF Highlander)
AS7-D-HT (Atlas 2)
BSK-MAZ (Bullshark from the mini-campaign)

I haven't built the BSK-M3 yet so I'm not sure if it comes with Double Heatsinks or not, someone else can confirm that.

The M3 does not. Its packing standard IS weapons, but the chassis itself has far more available tonnage than similarly sized mechs (its on par with the ANH and Atlas II). This is probably to simulate an endosteel skeleton and/or an XL engine.

EDIT: Also, if you're trying to grind for cbills, slavaging an M3 is the best thing possible. You can sell 100 tonners for about 1 million. A BSK-M3 sells for 2.5 million.

The Imp is actually really strong in tabletop (well in 3025 TT anyway. Don't know about later eras). Its a 100 tonner with 2xPPC, LRM15 and 5xML. Solid range power and solid up close firepower.
