On a ~30 minute walk to the bund in Shanghai through the fancy downtown area with all the high end stores myself and a coworker were propositioned by over 25 pimps, only counting the ones mentioning sex instead of stopping at the "pretty girl massage" bit. It was surreal watching pimps beeline through the crowd toward us right in front of a loving Prada. Warbadger fucked around with this message at 16:04 on Jan 31, 2020 |

A buddy of mine told me once how his uncle from mainland china immigrated here to work in his family's restaurant. Said buddy, who is by all means americanized, watched in shock as his uncle took out the trash, grabbed a rock, clocked a pigeon in the head, and started cleaning it in the kitchen to make a quick snack. When asked WTF he was doing, the uncle replied something along the lines of "easy meal cause the pigeons here are dumb enough not to fly away from humans"

This is my last night in India proper, and everything has been going very smoothly. No real good stories to share in a Haier fashion. So we are going to out last dinner in Kochi, and we never really did any city driving, mostly in the country. We had a great time on mountain roads on 4x4s, and I got carsick driving down those mountains after because we were going very fast and the curves were very tight. So now we are driving in Koch suburbs in some very tight roads. I guess that's the thing about India: every road was full of blind curves and every property has high walls right at the road. Cars need to be small to work here. But we are driving in a Hyundai crossover: fine in the abstract...not good here. After several turns, the car in front of us stops dead in a turn: HONK. Hooonk. HONK HOOONK. A honking battle begins between sides, each unwilling to go back and make room for the other to squeeze through. After about a minute of this, five large dudes get out of the car in front of us and start jawing with the other car. Scooters and bikes are piling up around us, then a couple families walking through to round it out. About 25 people around us. But nothing bad happens: everyone outside starts directing traffic to figure out how to get out of the snarl. We and the car in front back up, letting two cars and a truck through. We then try to go through the turn and a van almost hits us. the van though immediately, at great speed, backs up down the block to let us through. The more fun story is going on the airport tomorrow with a wife whose got a cold, which I think I'm also coming down with. Can't wait for extra screening trying to get back home.

Ugly In The Morning posted:What the gently caress. Do they not biopsy poo poo over there before they just start cutting our lungs? He was a chain-smoking whore monger who spend every cent he had on beer, darts, and hookers. He was feeling like poo poo for a week, finally went to the biggest hospital in Shenyang and was told that he had lunger cancer after an xray. They said he would be dead by the end of the week or something like that if he didn't loose a lung, and that would buy him another 2 months (hard to remember). The expected bill for the procedure was something pretty massive as well. His school bought him a ticket, he went back to Europe, got treated for an infection, and never came back to his wife and child in China.

So did eating anything predate the 60s or was this like how everyone who didn't push forward in line starved to death?

Bip Roberts posted:So did eating anything predate the 60s or was this like how everyone who didn't push forward in line starved to death? Around that time, you had a choice of 'eat anything you catch, no matter how gross' and dying of famine.

Bip Roberts posted:So did eating anything predate the 60s or was this like how everyone who didn't push forward in line starved to death? It's a complex question. Usually the "lol they eat everything!" comes from people from countries that really have a very limited range of animal foods compared to what's normal around the world. The variety of normal animals to eat in the US is tiny. Pigs, cows, chickens, salmon, turkey... uh. Like even tame options such as lamb and duck are unusual. People in Asia have always had a much broader range of things. There's also differences inside China. Chinese themselves make fun of the Cantonese for eating everything, and the Cantonese are like "gently caress yeah bro if it moves put it in my mouth", so. People will eat anything in a famine, but that famine food isn't around anymore. There are restaurants for old people to feel nostalgia and eat grass clippings or whatever, but the stuff people actually eat is either post or pre famine. If you look in a Sichuan cookbook from 2020 and one from 1920, for example, a lot of it is the same.

No, those are a luxury food. They're the same "expensive and flavorless show off order" category as shark's fin.

Some of it is just cultural, right? Like during the siege of Paris, everybody ate the zoo animals, but that's not why French people eat horses, eg. Or sort of the opposite how lobsters used to be boiled and canned as prison food because nobody in that era would choose to eat them.

Yeah that's what I'm saying. People in East Asia eat a whole lot of stuff that isn't as common in the west anymore. I miss it, a lot of that stuff is delicious. There was also a trend in the west for decades of rejecting things like stewed pig's feet as food for filthy peasants, and it's starting to come back since it's good. Of course there's also poo poo like sea cucumber or sea squirt which uh, nah.

I'm constantly caught off guard by how limited the range of "normal" food is to a large chunk of americans. Like loving lamb is a weird exotic foreign food to many. Lamb?? No thanks I don't eat ethnic food. Like I get not wanting to eat some weird giant insect roasted on a stick. But like practically spitting out food in shock when you learn it's lamb or bison or deer or something that isn't one of the 3 official meats is weird as hell.
