One of the things that makes that scene work is that they used the on-set sounds of the swords hitting. It's what makes things feel real, and my favorite example is from Mask of Zorro (1940) (skip to 1:00 if you don't want the buildup):

So then you see poo poo like this, which by all accounts *should* be a more intense scene, but the sound effects are overdubbed to be BIG and POWERFUL and all you get is a mess. You can even hear a shattering sound effect thrown in when they break a table with no glass on it.

It irks me in virtually every lightsaber fight how they almost always aim for the air around their targets just to make sure there are lots of flourishes.

What I really want is a duel where we see both of them using the force to predict how the battle will draw out and then the actual fight is two moves that ends in a death.

I finally got around to watching Rise of Skywalker, and I really enjoyed that during Rey/Ren's duel on the sunken Death Star, they actually use the Force to stop each other's blows on multiple occasions. I always thought it was strange that battles between these wizards with telekinetic powers boiled down to physical swordfights where nobody used their abilities in a meaningful way. They didn't get quite as creative with it as they could have--like, for instance, using the Force to turn off your opponent's lightsaber while they're trying to block your blow--but I appreciated that it was at least touched on in a way that I don't remember seeing before.

If TLJ wasn't so good I would chalk the whole trilogy up as a mistake.

God, there are really good ideas just under the surface but people like JJ are terrified of letting characters have any real emotions and flaws.

Yeeesh.

I didn't hate it--mostly because my expectations had been sufficiently lowered by all the negative reviews. There were striking visuals, excellent production/set/character design, fun action setpieces, and a handful of compelling ideas...but they were all held together with jarringly bad editing, and driven by some truly stilted plot devices and character choices.

To stay on topic...I guess subtle maybe isn't the right word for it, because it was front-and-center (but blink-and-you'll-miss-it fast), but I was really happy to see that Wedge had returned to the Resistance. Also that the young-looking Mon Calamari was addressed as "junior", implying that he's Ackbar's son.

Hot take. TRoS was good. The editing was only distracting in the first 20 minutes because the scenes were too short and for some reason they didnt use wipes, a star wars trope. After that is was good, and built upon TLJ fittingly and wrapped up well. Why cant people just allow decent films to be decent? Like 2 star wars films were amazing. Ep 8 and 9 were better than par for the course.

I was in exactly the same camp ever since I saw tRoS because I promptly forgot most of it immediately after walking out of the cinema but Jenny Nicholson recently did a youtube video about all the sucky parts of the film which runs for over an hour (nearly half the running time of the film itself) and I checked it out last night out of curiosity and it reminded me of all the many many explicably dumb parts of the film.

She's not even being super nitpicky, she excuses a lot of the lesser dumb stuff and just points out the really dumb stuff, like that goddamned secret puzzle knife macguffin that just makes no drat sense.

Or the part where you have an emotional moment with a real sacrifice by one of the most important characters in the 9 film series and then it means absolutely nothing because HA! R2D2 had a backup.

Why even have that whole, ‘can’t translate this because it’s evil!’ scene. In the end it added nothing.

Also HA! Rey didn't accidentally kill Chewie at all, he wasn't even on that ship which blew up.

Also HA! Vader didn't kill Palpie, he .... just got better.

Also HA! Reylo didn't kill the leader of the First Order, Snoke wasn't even a real person and Palpie even has a big jar full of spares.

Also HA! Rey died defeating Palpie but Ben just brought her back immediately.

Also HA! Han Solo might be dead but he can just pop in for a chat anyway even though he wasn't a Jedi and he's not a Force ghost or anything.

They not only repeatedly "killed off" a bunch of characters during this film only for them to come back with almost no fanfare, they also undid/undercut a bunch of the big dramatic deaths from previous films. Leia's death was the only one which stuck and as we've already discussed that wasn't great.

JJ Abrams set up a whole bunch of his infamous "mystery box" plotlines in The Force Awakens but then Rian Johnson just abandoned most of them in The Last Jedi rather than 'solve' them (Luke doesn't give a poo poo about his lightsaber, Rey's parents were nobody special, Snoke gets killed without his past being revealed, etc etc). Johnson was supposed to write the story for The Rise of Skywalker and Colin Trevorrow was supposed to direct but after Trevorrow left the project Disney brought JJ Abrams back and he obviously went "gently caress you I'm undoing everything you guys did in Last Jedi and I'm bringing back all my mystery boxes"

Spending a crazy amount of energy on setups only to abandon the payoffs has been a recurring theme through the entire trilogy. :v:

I've been re-watching The Venture Brothers recently, because I think I've only seen seasons 6 and 7 once each so I figured I might as well start at the beginning.

And in the season one episode "Are You There, God? It's Me, Dean" (where Dean has testicular torsion,) The Monach is taking Hank and Brock back to the cocoon, and Hank is reading a book that has a list of all The Guild villains.

The Monarch asks for Hank to look him up, but he's not in the book. At the time, we're supposed to take this to mean that it's just because The Monarch is a one-shot lovely villain, but in the season 3 premiere, "Shadowman 9: In The Cradle of Destiny," we find out that (minor spoiler for a ten+ year old season, not putting it in a box):
It's because The Monarch never officially registered as a villain with The Guild. He was a henchman for Phantom Limb, and then just started arching Dr.Venture on the side because he hates him, then quit being a henchman for good and took Dr.Girlfriend/Queen Etheria/Lady AuPair/Dr.Mrs.The Monarch with him.

(Ok, the REAL reason is that when Doc and Jackson wrote season 1 it WAS because The Monarch was a lovely villain not worthy of The Guild book, but I like that they were able to retcon in a reason that fits with The Guild's insistence on crushing bureaucracy.)
