There is apparently no standardization of snake names because we have unrelated copperhead snakes in America.

The North American copperhead is in the Viperidae family; the (much less coppery, bah!) Australian copperhead is in the Elapidae family.

Now let me tell you about possums...

Yes, that's why I said unrelated. I'm just annoyed that the snake community hasn't standardized the names. An American copperhead is rarely fatal to adults, while the Australian one is Australian.

It is that way with the common names for any organism.

A North American copperhead bite is still a pretty serious thing to deal with too, despite generally not being lethal.

The snake community calls everything by species name, for just that reason.

There are so many cases of different things having the same names in different countries! Hence my mention of possums. Robins are another case: in England, the name is used for a red-breasted flycatcher, in North America, for a red-breasted thrush, and in Australia for a bunch of brightly colored passerine birds in the family Petroicidae.

Yeah, but then you get redundant names, like Killer Australians.

It seems useful to have that there as sometimes people forget that Australians can spit venom up to 30 feet.

I got a kick out of explaining to people that the guy who head butted a cop, got his driver's license permanently revoked for too many DUIs, and is famous for getting trashed at dive bars in his suit and making out with dudes is a beloved local celebrity and very wealthy lawyer who created the Alcatraz East crime museum in Pigeon Forge.

My wife and I were just trying to explain the Wally's saga to our friend that moved away from Orlando 10 years ago and I think this sums it up:

John Morgan rips remodeled Wally’s as ‘hipster bar’

A man with a law degree posted:

“I don’t need to walk in to Arthur Murray dance studio to know it’s not for me," he said. “This is a hipster bar. I am not a hipster, if you haven’t noticed."

This came up in the goon milhist Discord and crossbows are no loving joke. People think that it's like video games or TV where the bolt just sticks halfway into whatever it hits, but at close range you're basically using a medieval rifle. That bolt went through the dog and the door to hit the guy on the other side with lethal energy.

These guys got Daryl Dixon's crossbow to test on realistic head analogues, thinking the same thing. At that close range, even a bolt without a head will shoot straight through a skull and exit your backyard.

It is, which is why I just skip to the gore. Their head analogues are actually some of the best on the market for realistic testing, so it's useful for getting a feel of what kind of damage different weapons and objects can do when you're writing something.

Only crossbows with major mechanical advantages like a crannequin or windlass could pierce plate.

The more common hand‐spanned crossbows were for the unarmoured masses.

The church tried to ban their use on Christians. Possibly for humanitarian reasons, possibly because they didn't want to be on the receiving end of them. An early example of the fine tradition of "No, it's only a warcrime when you do it to us."

Shooting and Fucking
are the same thing!

That reminds me of how the Puckle Gun, a early 18th century proto-machine gun that never saw any action but could theoretically fire as many as 9 rounds per minute, was designed to be able to fire square bullets as well as conventional round bullets. The normal bullets being meant for good Christian enemies and the square ones for Turks reportedly to "convince the Turks of the benefits of Christian civilization".
