Cross-posting the most positive story from caucus night here:

https://iowastartingline.com/2020/02/04/how-sanders-outreach-paid-off-in-iowas-first-latino-caucus/

The Iowa Democratic Party tried to make the caucuses more inclusive and accessible this year, opening 87 satellite caucus precincts, 11 of which were specifically set up to meet cultural and language needs.

In Des Moines, the obvious place to hold a Latino caucus was the Southside YMCA, where a vast majority of Latinos live. This precinct was an experiment and a special event I wanted to cover. I made it a point to arrive two hours before everything started. Once there, I saw a room full of reporters, ranging from Spanish TV channels like Univision and CNN Español, to organizations like America’s Voice.

It was amazing to see so many Spanish media together!

About an hour before 7 p.m., caucus participants started to show up. They got in line to check in, and you could feel the excitement Latinos brought with them. Listening to so many people speak Spanish, talking to each other and chanting for their favorite candidate gave me a sense of pride. When campaigns are intentional in pursuing the Latino vote, the community responds with big numbers and enthusiasm.

There were 187 caucus-goers at the satellite caucus, with what appeared to be 171 people supporting Sen. Bernie Sanders. Smaller groups of people supporting former Vice President Joe Biden, former mayor Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Elizabeth Warren also were visible.

I first approached Sara Lunas who has lived in Iowa for the last 25 years. Lunas is not eligible to vote because she is a permanent resident on her way to becoming a U.S. citizen. She was there to take her disabled husband to caucus for Sanders, who has made a considerable push this election cycle to engage Latinos across the country in politics.

They supported the Vermont senator because he talks about helping undocumented immigrants become citizens and his belief in universal health care. She doesn’t like what’s happening at the U.S.-Mexico border — people seeking asylum because of the violence in their home country, only to be rejected and separated from their family members.

This year Lunas saw her friends, neighbors and family getting involved in the caucuses and believed it was in great part to the growing discrimination against Latinos.

Not far from Lunas I chatted with 39-year-old Yesenia Leon, one of three people supporting Biden. She has participated in the caucuses before, but this time her motivation was a growing concern about the way taxes for small businesses have increased.

Her family owns a few restaurants in town, and she shared that under the current administration they are paying higher taxes, which she didn’t think was fair given that some large corporations pay no taxes. Lunas also wanted to vote for a president who would help the Latino community because they live in fear of deportation and harassment. She believed that the former vice president was the only one who could beat President Donald Trump because Biden has government experience, and that made Lunas feel that she could trust him.

“He already knows what to do, and that’s important to me,” she said, noting her second choice was Sen. Sanders.

Karen Yerena, 31, was there as an observer and a Sanders’ fan. Yerena’s not a citizen but she feels it’s extremely important to participate in any way possible. She decided that being an observer would give her the chance to see how the process works. She wanted to be there on behalf of all those who live in fear and remain in the shadows as an immigrant in America.

Christian Ucles originally is from Honduras and has lived in America since he was 7 years old.

He has participated in six caucuses, and this time was there in support of Sen. Warren.

“We need a president like her fighting for refugees and against what’s happening at the border,” said Ucles, 37.

One of only four supporters for Warren, Ucles joined the Sanders group because Warren was not viable in the precinct. Although he favored Warren, he recognized that Sanders’ campaign had done an excellent job organizing the Latino vote and recruiting volunteers that have worked with Latinos for a long time.

He added that Sanders and Warren were very similar, but he would like to see a woman president. Still, he thinks Sanders will do a good job if elected president.

At the end of the junta de vecinos (caucus) it was obvious that Sanders’ hard work paid off; he was the clear winner of the Latino vote at this satellite precinct.

Whether we all support him or not, we must recognize he has motivated and encouraged Latinos to get involved and participate in a process that, not long ago, was totally unknown for many in the community. He has earned the trust and given hope to many constituencies that have been marginalized and discriminated for a long time.

It is also undeniable that Trump’s rhetoric and attacks are a huge motivator behind the rise of Latino participation. We are ready to elevate our voices, mobilize, vote and let candidates and the country know that the Latino vote can no longer be ignored.

Bhaskar Sunkara

Yes, the Iowa caucuses were a disaster, but Sanders supporters need to remember that if they organize and turn out to vote they can indeed win

This has been a confusing 24 hours, to say the least. The Iowa caucus appeared to go fine, but then a tabulating fiasco delayed official results. We’re still waiting on them.
The problem, in part, was rooted in a “Shadow Inc” application used to help tally the votes. The app had gotten attention in the weeks before the caucus, with experts worrying that it could be vulnerable to hacking.

There’s no indication that happened, and since the results were also all recorded manually, we should have confidence in their integrity (if not the byzantine caucus system itself). But it’s just another reason why some voters might not trust election results. Liberals have at times made hysterical claims that Russia “hacked” the election results in 2016. Keith Olbermann even went as far as to say that the United States was the victim of a “Russian coup”.

On the right, Donald Trump pushed the idea that illegal voting could swing elections in 2016, paving the way for him to contest a potential Hillary Clinton victory that year. And he’s renewed those claims recently, stating last July that “You’ve got people voting that shouldn’t be voting. They vote many times. Not just two times, not just three times … It’s a rigged deal.” Of course, the widespread problem is not illegal voting, but voter suppression – the systematic effort by Republican officials to make it harder for poor people, particularly people of color, to participate in elections.

On the left, Bernie Sanders supporters have a more reasonable beef. The Democratic National Committee pushed its preferred candidate in 2016, helping the Hillary Clinton team beat Bernie Sanders through measures such as limiting the number of debates (25 in 2008, but down to six in 2016). But these actions have been inflated into a narrative that the DNC “rigged” an election that Sanders would have otherwise won.

The key reason why Sanders fell short by several million votes in the primaries – that he was a relatively unknown candidate who ran out of time as he was gaining momentum – doesn’t have the same visceral appeal as a “stolen” race.

With Iowa, these claims will only get more attention. With 62% of the vote released as of Tuesday night, it appears that Sanders won the first and second rounds of the popular vote, but is slightly behind Pete Buttigieg in the delegate count. But on Monday night Buttigieg was able to take the stage and prematurely claim victory, and more importantly Sanders’ main rival, Joe Biden, was able to escape to New Hampshire without having the media reckon with the fact that the presumptive national frontrunner probably placed fourth in Iowa.

It’s all quite convenient. And the name of the tech company that made the dubious app that caused much of the trouble is Shadow Inc!

But fellow Bernie Sanders supporters hear my plea – we gain nothing by playing into the idea that the process is so stacked against us that we can’t win. For one, saying that elections are all “hacked” or manipulated nowadays is a great way to encourage working people not to come out and vote. Why bother supporting an insurgent candidate, if the outcome is already assured?

Beyond that, this emphasis is a distraction from both the economic concerns that Bernie Sanders excels at talking about and the grassroots organizing that’s propelling him so far this campaign. Sanders placed well in Iowa, not because his Twitter warriors memed the DNC hard enough, but because his volunteers knocked on 500,000 doors in the state in January alone. Despite only 4% of caucus attendees being Latino, they poured $1.5m into bilingual mailers. The campaign made so many phone calls (more than 7m) that they had to tell volunteers to stop – they had virtually no one left to call.

This unprecedented ground game was all in the service of a popular candidate running on a popular set of issues. There’s a reason why Democratic party elites like John Podesta are worried about the Sanders campaign – Bernie could very well win. With a dedicated base of supporters and turnout from lower-propensity voters, like working-class Latinos, Sanders has reliable votes and volunteers. And by the time the establishment coheres around Biden or some other candidate it will be too late.

We need to be vigilant for dirty tricks and rule changes meant to undermine us, but we should feel confident that victory is possible. And that means letting people know that their vote will be counted, and that even the flawed institutions of American democracy can sometimes deliver progress.

The reason Bernie did well in Iowa and definitely won the popular vote and probably won the SDE count once 100% of precincts report is that people like us were enthusiastic and donated and volunteered and worker our asses off, and one little DNC ratfucking is not going to stop that. If anything, it should inspire us to work even harder to make sure we lap the fuckers and win so bigly that there's no way they can steal a goddamn thing.

In conclusion:

Bernie doesn't need Iowa. Biden needed Iowa. Buttigieg needed Iowa. They all needed IOWA because everyone but Bernie lives and dies on the media's attention.

Biden and Buttguy are media candidates who ultimately rely on the media covering them as an inevitability. This is why Biden is a complete rear end in a top hat to anyone on the campaign trail and why after Iowa he was going ... 'Wha' happened?' (i'm real red wagon). He has no clue how this happened. Pete yeah he's benefitting here and it's clear the DNC has been trying to give him two days, but the guy isn't viable long term. If the DNC and Media consolidate behind him they are gonna get destroyed once you bring in a more diverse electorate.

Bernie is a ground game guy he doesn't need the media to tell people he's going to win. He can do it all without them.

ANd the best part about this is Republicans don't get it, most pundits don't get it. Honest at this point it seems like this is pretty much as good as if the results had come out. Bernie doesn't need the media attention, Biden got bounced hard, Buttguy is gonna split Bidens support further in the next few contests, and all this just amde it REALLY loving CLEAR TO ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE the DNC will not stand idly by, given any opportunity they will try to gently caress Bernie. So now it's Clear Eyes, Full Hearts Can't Lose.

So it's left on us to work our asses off. And one last take away, the IOWA poo poo did not effect Bernie's support in the polls that followed. Sure it sucks that we didn't' gain much (if any), but as expected we didn't lose anyone either.
