First, I want to remove the stain of leftists being in charge anywhere at all, and only once that's done and the idea of perhaps not making GBS threads on the poor has been safely removed from political discourse, then and only then I will worry about the stain of having sold my soul to fascists to achieve my primary goal.

Something that was left unclear to me from that independent article. Was afd support actively courted or did they decide to back the fdp candidate on their own accord? If the latter, did the fdp know of their intention beforehand, so he could have done the right thing under the circumstances and withdraw his candidacy?

you don't push for an uncertain vote of confidence, that's an insane thing to do probably they tried to just grab the power and it backfired, as such things do, and spiralled out of control. what is *possible* is that they were trying to get AfD to abstain or something bizarre like that, but no. likely result is an emboldened AfD and hopefully a loss of support for the FPD in favour of the Greens or someone so that there's an actual majority, but whatever else happens now they've demonstrated that the right cannot govern without the AfD like idiots. If the latter, did the fdp know of their intention beforehand, so he could have done the right thing under the circumstances and withdraw his candidacy? There's a lot of conflicting statements going around, but what we do know: - The AfD proactively offered to support the FDP back in November. - As per Kemmerich himself, the FDP was acutely aware that this outcome was possible or even probable when they decided to put him up as candidate. - In the first two rounds of voting, there were a couple defectors each for the Linke and the AfD candidate. Kemmerich was only put up in the third round. And in that same round the vote numbers (it's an anonymous vote) were a clean split along party lines between the Linke and the FDP candidate, while the AfD one received no votes at all. So the FPD definitely knew this could happen, and the candidacy was decided upon with this knowledge in mind. What's more, a few signs point towards this having been coordinated between FDP and the AfD to begin with, possibly with the involvement of the CDU.

Centrists generally do not need to be co-opted, as they ultimately serve the same political clientele as the fash and will be ditched at the drop of a hat should it come to be that the fash can more easily satisfy said clientele's demands.

Emmanuel Macron, pilloried at home and abroad, is Europe’s best hopequote:Spinning across this dark, forbidding landscape, guided by ideological stars from another era, Macron – once likened to Jupiter, the Roman god of gods – follows a solitary orbit, attacked at home and often patronised or ridiculed abroad.
