I haven't hit on a good strategy that doesn't annoy the recruiter yet

"I'm more interested in finding a good fit. Once I've had a chance to learn more about the responsibilities of the position and had a chance to assess all available benefits I think we'll be in a better place to discuss salary."

If they press you, just be stubborn and tell them you can't realistically name a number until you have a better understanding of the demands of the position. They typically won't know what to do.

If they KEEP pressing, tell them "I don't typically discuss salary until we get to the offer stage. I'm sure we can work something out if this turns out to be a good fit for both of us."

If they're just total assholes and give you an ultimatum just say "that's too bad, I really think I might've been interested" and hang up, leaving them to sulk about their lost commission.

What if I want to screen the job and maybe sure it's not some lovely lowball?

I hate spending 15 minutes on the phone with a recruiter just to find out that they're trying to hit me with the ol' 5-figure discount

"I'm sorry, I can't take this call unless you can give me the salary range for the position you're recruiting for."

And then repeat that.

Pretend you're the recruiter.

honestly that's what i would have thought, the way we did interviews at now-last-job (last day: today :toot: ) was if the first couple people liked the candidate we'd rope the boss in for 15 minutes at the end

You won't be able to do this without some research on your part, a good recruiter won't give you their range either. Just don't apply to shitshops and use Glassdoor and payscale and pay attention to the maximum reported valued for that position. If you still don't know whether they can afford you, then you just go through the interview process anyway and hope the offer on the other end is decent, the worst thing that happens is you're out a small amount of your own time anyway.

If you mean what the actual red flags were (which aren't good, despite my poor grammar), it's obvious stuff like blames others for project failures, bigoted/arrogant attitude, having a fixed approach they take on starting at new places (for managers) etc

about ready to start looking again. whole lot of job title inflation going on combined with our main ~agile transformation specialist~ getting canned combined with my making a lot less than the market makes me think i should be on the way out. really kind of sucks being heavy in some industry specific software but hopefully i can find something else.

recruiter tells you about opportunities X, Y, Z; sets up an interview for X; meanwhile you see a job advert for Z

is it unethical to apply to Z directly

Do you assume that the recruiter will, at every single point from this point forward, act as if he was your fiduciary, and always act with your absolute best interests in mind, and never try to sell you to the company for less than the absolute maximum of your worth?

Just make sure they havent already submitted you for Z already. Some places will throw both applications out if they get a duplicate from multiple sources.

even if they don’t throw it out, once the recruiter submits you they’re contractually granted the commission if the company hires you so they’ll likely be part of the process regardless. this is how i got my current job - recruiter submits me, I get rejected, I reach out to first-party recruiter, I get hired, third-party recruiter still gets paid

get yours. apply to Z direct if you feel like it’s your best move. that recruiter is just doing what’s in their own best interest, do what’s in yours

yea i think i probably will do that. recruiter is pushing X hard so i don’t think he’s sent my details out to Z. X seems kinda small-time, project is interesting but it’s a tiny office of like 15 people with not huge ambition to grow much beyond that

Z might tell you to go through the recruiter anyway, or possibly have to pay the recruiter anyway, depending on their contract. Not your problem though so go ahead and apply!

who knows, maybe. he mentioned he wouldnt want a c suite person to overhear and get the wrong impression, so i think its something to do with him. whatever his reasoning, it ended up quelling my doubts about pursuing this contract.
