Yeah I've done this. It's fine. Those mats are, no exaggeration, a foot thick and you're safe to land on them from a good 4-5m up. You could still hurt yourself if you land funny but how that guy landed was fine. Mostly just avoid landing on your head/neck or like, screwing up your wrist by landing at a funny angle.

Yes, this is Everts, an air carrier that operates the last of the DC-6's, specifically to get into runways around villages like these. Most of these villages have cut their runways specifically to cater to DC-3's, -4's, and -6's.

Ok, idea time: Airplane wheels, but they're giant pizza cutters. Also the airstrip is a giant pizza.

There's nothing "safe" about that situation. Its entirely possible you touch two different metal parts that are slightly insulated from each other and run a tiny bit of current through your heart.

Shai-Hulud posted:Just out of curiosity. When you are stuck in an electrified vehicle, is it safe to touch the metal parts of the vehicle as long as you're not touching the ground at the same time? Should be, right? It’s not absolutely safe. An ideal conductor has the same voltage at all points on it, but no real object is an ideal conductor. Every real conductor under current acts in some small way like a resistor and has a gradient across it. How steep and how dangerous this gradient is depends on how conductive the object is and how much current it carries. The bed of a dump truck is a big hunk of metal and you might be able to do the splits in while it was energised without feeling anything. Those big tyres help, too, as would dry ground underneath. If instead you were in the bed of a rusty Tacoma, parked on wet ground. Here the “all metal at same potential” approximation is less good. The wet ground will allow more current, and the rusty body will drop more volts across it. Imagine if you were on the roof when a wire landed on the hood. Don’t try to escape by sliding down the bed. Your body would be near line voltage while your feet touched the grounded bed. The existing metallic connexion between cab and bed is… not great. Yeah of course its not a safe situation in general and i wasn't thinking about doing the splits across a truck. I was more wondering about touching part of the frame while inside the car and moving around. So in general it would be "safe" even though you should try not to touch at two points at the same time? Keep contact to a minimum? You know what, i'll just try to not end up in that situation at all!
