Advertising that you're not using preservatives with pictures of the reason people use preservatives in the first place is an odd choice

Oh poo poo, I initially hadn't bothered to read the article and just assumed this was Burger King taking on the "No Artifical Preservatives" poo poo and saying "yeah, we use preservatives so this doesn't happen". But no, they're just advertising the removal by showing a whopper getting moldy. Great marketing guys.

Coz that ad would be more effective if they showed a Whopper moulding alongside a Big Mac, (or different chains burger), staying the same, then getting some dude in a white coat to say "This one is still edible after a month because CHEMICALS!!!, but the Whopper was made with natural ingredients, so did what nature does and got mould. Buy our NATURAL burger, not their one which has icky chemicals in it."

The only dumber marketing move than showcasing a moldy burger is showcasing it next to your competitor's edible one.

I know I'll go to considerable lengths to avoid calling something a 'preservative' on the ingredients list even when its primary purpose in the food is to preserve it.

Yeah, the marketing approach is simple to pinpoint as a call out based on the people who boggle at fast food not rotting like an old vegetable after a couple days. It's positively straightforward and incredibly lacking in the reptile brain bullshit that would tell you "please don't make customers brains light up mold and tasty burger at the same time I'm begging you"

It could just be as simple as somebody in the Burger King organization getting legitimately pissed off that their burgers will get moldy and gross fast without the traditional preservatives and somebody else going "You know what, we could use that as a marketing thing"

Wasn't there a video floating around for a while about a McDonald's hamburger being left out for like a month and it doesn't mold or anything it just kind of shrivels up because of the hydration?

Those burgers are still edible for the same reason why honey doesn't ever go bad.

McD’s burgers don’t go bad because it’s well cooked, heavily salted meat wrapped in plastic or a fairly tight cardboard box. We’ve been preserving meat with salt and low air flow for millennia.

Eating too much salt is obviously bad for you but if you never consume salt or sodium at all that's...also very bad. Like yeah we eat way too much salt in America but people going "I will never eat any sodium ever for any reason" are taking it way too far.

Serious Eats did a good set of experiments about why some hamburgers don't rot. It has nothing to do with preservatives or salt content. It's all about moisture: McDonald's thin hamburgers dry out before mold starts growing. Once they're dessicated, it doesn't matter how long they sit out, they won't mold. But if you put them in a plastic bag to prevent moisture loss, they'll mold just fine. https://www.seriouseats.com/2016/02/the-food-lab-why-mcdonalds-burgers-never-rot.html
