The first 3 Sonata Arctica albums are finally on Spotify now. Thank gently caress because that Ecliptica re-recording was chipping away at my sanity bit-by-bit every time I decided to give it a shot.

Been listening grooves into the entire Cult of Luna discog and I'm hankering for something similar. I know of Isis and Neurosis of course, but are there any other post-metal bands that hit that somewhat Scandinavian melodic feeling, mixing clean and growly vocals and giving a general vibe of being on a sad, doomed spaceship tumbling into a melancholic black hole?

Sólstafir? Not really growly, but melancholic as gently caress. Their songs typically build and build over the course of minutes. This is what passes for "uplifting" in their discography: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8n8Uy5KmvU (Warning: May make you want to move to Iceland right the gently caress now)

I got to go to Iceland a couple years ago, very sad I missed the driftwood drumset attraction. I might never have come home if I had seen it.

Might not be quite what you're after but maybe try Jesu's first two albums? Very melancholic but no growls.

Speaking of SA, I spent so much time in the mid to late 2000s listening to their first 2 albums and ignoring anything beyond that after hearing Days of Greys and deciding anything outside their first 2 is trash. Mid last year I finally heard Winterhearts and Reckoning and they are like 90% as good as the first 2. There are nights when I just listen to those 4 in a row and it flows so nice like one super long album with similar songwriting.

Really appreciate all the suggestions. Itches are being scratched, I'm liking what I'm hearing, and I'm looking forward to digging in. Also, like once a year, I'll listen to Sonata Arctica for a week. It's like a bit of a holiday.
